Scran ton, September 7:?
Scranton seems to be moving !
along- finely these days, but business
has not been so good here
this week on account of the
flood which sweDt along Lynch's !
river. Folks in the Hannah
and Hymamville sections have
been cut off from here on ac- !
count of Cowards,Anderson and
Bass' bridges being washed
away by the flood. It is report-1
ed, however, that Anderson's
bridge will be passable by tomorrow
and if the report be i
correct, there is no doubt that
Scranton will do a good busi- j
ness the rest of the week.
The mail service is very uncertain
these days. You only!
get it at the convenience of the
railroads, but that is probably
the best they can do, owing (
to the condition of the roads.
A fine shower of rain fell in !
Scranton Saturday night, cool- '
ing off the atmosphere consid- i
erablv.

Dr W S Lynch found his new

him, but did not lose his shoes. 1

A Cardb?ard Capital.
Every time 1 come to Piris I am 11
struck with the unreal appearance of
the town, especially in the lew P
busy quarter which lies all round P
the Champs Elysees. The tall, '
blank gray houses, with their gray
wooden shutters, look no more real
than the cardboard houses in a stage
play. Moreover, it seems impossible
than any one is alive inside the i
houses. You never see a face at a o
window, and no one ever 6eems to i<
emerge through the great brown *
doors?doors which are obviously a
made of painted cardboard and not t

THE CARDIFF GIANT.
A Famous Fake That Even Deceived
Many Scientists.
In the autumn of 18G9 it was ru- j
mored through the Onondaga val- {
I*}-, in New York state, that a co- ;
lossal petrified man had been un- I
^arthed by a farmer of Cardiff, a
Tillage not far from Syracuse.
Abandoning their crops, the country
folks for miles around hurried
to see the marvel and were closely
followed by the dwellers in Syracuse
and other nearby cities. Soon
:he lucky farmer, who had set up a
cent over the hole where the alleged
petrified corpse lay, was doing a
jrofitable business in admission
fees. Those who paid to enter be
leld at the bottom of a six foot pit
:he figure of an enormous man,
vith the limbs contracted, as
hough he had died in agony, and
he body discolored, apparently
xoin long contact "with the earth.
Nobody was allowed to touch the
>etrified man, a fact which doubtess
accounted for the delay in e*josing
the fraud. And so lifelike
vas the appearance that even sci-!
;ntists pronounced it genuine, a
itory being finally circulated that
he remains had been positively
dentified by an Onondaga squaw
is those of a gigantic Indian
>rophet who had died many centu ies
before and had predicted that
lis people would see him again. .
['he ihowman, Barnum,. vainly tried J
o buy the giant, and a syndicate |
vas actually formed to exploit it
'rom town to town.
But a day came when the famous
laleontologist, Professor Marsh of
t'ale, managed to make a close eximination
antTat once pronounced
t a humbug. i\yed out of soft
tone, and that v ^-recently. Investigation
then s.. ed that the

rest named Hull. At tii.it juncure,
unluckily for the conspirators,

overal farmers as a man they had
net one night at a roadside tavern
vhen he was carting a large box,

some tobacco cutting mahinerv
consigned to parties in
Syracuse. Following up this clew,
t was found that no such box had
>aesed through the tollgate beween
Cardiff and Syracuse, and
iltimately a full confession was obained.
It then appeared that the giant
iad been cut out of a block of
tone, the work being begun at Fort
)odge, la., and completed at Chiago,
whence the grotesque but realBtic
statue was shipped to a place
tear Binghamton. Here Hull loaded
it on a wagon and carried it to

s worth adding that some twenty
ears later a similar hoax was perorated
in Australia, the swindlers

efore the inevitable exposure came.
