SEPT. 3,1908. 1 ? ? - ??? ; "V Things To Consider. s The question we would put to 11 the voters of Williamsburg is, t( Do we want a man from this county for Solicitor of the third ri 'judicial circuit? Normally the ob _ _ 11 vious answer would be yes. Now, ' . o are the conditions abnormal? Let , fi us see. Those who kuow him U b.-st believe Mr Stoll qualified both bv native intelligence aud I 1 * special training to fill the office L creditably and that he will do t< his duty without fear or favor, d We are free to say that if we I h (did uot think so Mr Stoll would d Vnot receive our support. True he w ' as not had a great long ex- \ erience in prosecuting criminals, si DUt neither had John Wilson "when he was" elected Solicitor. t * oi With natural ability, enhanced by S training and education, it lies within the power of any man to fill any office with which the * E people choose to entrust him. And we feel assured that Mr ^ Stoll has honorable pride not to ^ f! fail to meet the expectations of his friends Now, if our premises ^ be true, we have in Mr Stoll a v ti P candidate qualified for the office and a home man besides. This C means a good deal more than mere sentiment. A citizen of "Williamsburg must have her in { terests first at heart and with his broadened field of usefulness Mr o Stoll would have opportunity to bring our county in closer touch j( with the rest of the State. The J fact that a Williamsburg man ^ had been chosen as the State's , li prosecuting attorney would give y our county a prestige she has not enjoyed for many years. Look ^ over the circuit: Sumter has Judge j Purdy; Clarendon, Judge Wilson . and Lee, Lieutenant Governor ? S McLeod. What has Williamsburg? ^ Heretofore cur county has been [* ~ ~ " I truly a negligible quantity in the - ^ I State politics, usetul only when her votes were needed to help k . elect a favorite son in some other I part of the State. Shall we be ^ content to neglect the opportuni- t ty now before us and by so doIjDg say to the world that we "do ^ not care for recognition in the j State government? Your vote next 1 Tuesday will tell. ^ Against Mr McLaughlin we 1 have nothing to say and if he lived in Williamsburg we would | probably give him our cordial J support. We believe him, how- j I ever, no better qualified for this J pffice than Mr Stoll. By the ( I $ I < ? jruce of Governor Ansel's appointment he is now Solicitor and ,vith all the advantage of being n possession he received only a yw more votes than Mr Stoll. 'ompare the vote in Williamsmrg with that in Lee and it hows that in their respective lonie counties, where each candilate is best known, Mr Stoll re eived a much larger percentage it the votes cast for this office ban did his opponent. Now, let us eliminate personal eeling and vote for the man who j i?i a rineitimi tn K^at sorvp thp >eople of our county. Let us ,dopt the motto of D'Artagnan u ''The Three Guardsman:" "One or all and all for one and that ne?Williamsburg county 1 " Ansel 1,614; Blease 5S4?where i the man who said Blease would j arry Williamsburg county? In the second primary yon ometimes have Hobsou's choice? nd it isn't Richmond Pearson, ither. The Farmers' Cotton association ?ems to have been swallowed up j the vortex of politics and cot>n is bringing eight cents. In Newberry county the notoious Hub Evans, who ran for tie legislature, received 951 votes ut of 2,651. The "beaver hat ill of money"' didn't seem to ) work this time. The third place on the legisttive ticket in this county seems ) be a sort of "after you, my ear Gasto.n,"affair. Mr J S Graam expressed a desire to withraw and the executive committee ouldn't let him, and now conies lr Gourdiu asking his friends to ipport Mr Graham. Out of the seven candidates fferiug for the United States enate R Goodwyn Rhett was hosen by the National Democratic i? ?i Dmmiuee tu wane spceuucro iui irvan, and so far as we have heard e is the only one invited. What a soir plexus blow is this to those who tirough malice or ignorance imugned Mr Rhett's Democracy. Lnd yet tbiough the machiuaion of his enemies this able, leau and patriotic son of Carona went down in defeat. The Columbia State's insensate ttacks on John Gary Evans mack very much of the methods f one John P Grace of tender lpmnrv. Mr Gracp harned on a jtter written by Mr Rhett six ears ago, while the State has ug up one sent out as a circuar by Evans twelve years ago. Vhy revive factionalism 1 Let the Id wounds heal. The careers of >oth Evans and Smith are doubtess open to criticism, but why urn the search-light o.i one and ympathetically shield the other rom its blinding rays? Let the >eople decide between the two nen on their merits. How's This ? "We offer One Hundred Dollars Reward for any case of Catarrh hat cannot be cured by Hall's Caarrh Cure. f. j. cheney &co. "he earliest application of the tele>ne in connection with a switched was made at Bridgeport ConnJune, 1878, where in the eagerness various fire companies to arrive first flres, the men of company No. 5. iich was next to the telephone office, d the telephone operator to request twenty-one patrons to give the tarnation over the telephone of any ? and to report the fact at the enle house. This engine was not only ! first at several flres, but in some 'sterious manner was frequently on way before the alarm struck, ["his reached a climax on the oecan of a small fire in a dwelling, which > fire company attended with muf- ( J hell, in response to a telephone , issage, and no fire alarm was pulled. . their return, the engine was driven the house of a rival company with j II ringing, and when the men rushed t vith inquiries they were told that ? fire had been extinguished. Mter this occurrence, the chief of i fire department gave orders that mpanies should not respond to a fire irm received over a telephone, but i insurance agents of the city apaled to the city council, who ordered it all fire engine bouses should be uipped with telephones.?Brooklyn gle.
