ANENT LAKE CITY.
P MENTION MADE OF MATTERS OF MAJOR
AND MINOR MOMENT-LAKE CITY
LEADSIN TOBACCO.
Lake City, August 4:?Dr
D Rollins, now of Baltimore,
is here on a visit to friends and
relatives. He expects to be in
this section about three weeks.
The friends of Dr Rollins and
of his father, the late Mr R D
Rollins, will be pleased to know
that he is doing well in his new
J home.
9^ Judge Green and Mr S W
Gowdy returned Friday night
HB from their trip out West. They
^B report a very much enjoyed
jaunt.
rTbe printers by changing- the
word "rods'' into "roads" in
our item of last week about the
two wanderers, turned a clear
expression into meaningless
jargon.
Mr A A Brown,from his home
at Leo. sent the writer some
apples last week which were, in
the opinion of all who saw them,
^? exceptionally fine country apples.
The largest measured 13i
inches in circumference and
weighed 15 ounces, only one
ounce less than a pound. They
were greenish white with pink
stripes. In a note accompany-J
ing the apples Mr Brown stated !
that the ones sent were not J
much larger than quite a lot or
others he had. It would be bliss
to spend a month with him when

ling and cream sauce.
HB The tobacco market here
opened on July 14th. From that
H date up to the night of July
|^F 31 seven hundred and thirty
three thousand pounds had been
sold on the floors of our three
warehouses. Of course no other
market in the State handled any
thing like as much in the same
time, with the possible exception
of Mullins, and we are
reliably informed that even
Mullins fell below these figures.
The tobacco is coming here from
^ all sections: Clarendon, Florence
Sumter and Williamsburg
furnishing the bulk. And prices
are good, too. Of course very
Hjtt little can be expected for poor,
HV trashy primings, but even this
stuff sells and anything like
good tobacco commands good
prices. Several farmers have
sold their entire crop in bulk
m at net prices exceeding a hundred
dollars per acre.
Mr J E Godwin gave us some
f fine samples of syrup Monday,
PEOPL
W;
Of course they are from nis <
i crop of last year. He tested the i
new method of preserving- the 1
syrup b}r sealing it up in bottles
and one of the bottles given us
contained ribbon cane syrup 1
and another Japanese canesyr- ]
up, both filled with syrup hot i
from the evaporator and sealed. 1
On opening the bottles the con- i
tents were found as fresh and 1
pnre as when first poured there- 1
in. The third bottle was filled i
from a barrel put up in the
usual way. Comparing this syr- j
up with that from a sealed bottle ,
the superiority of the sealed is ]
very apparent. Mr Godwin plan- 1
ted one hundred and fifty stalks J
of the Japanese cane. From j
the patch he got forty-four {
gallons of syrup and put up i
eleven hundred stalks for seed.

THE FARMERS' SUPPLY CO. '
I
Somethioa About One of Klngstree's i
Largest Mercantile Houses.
One of the largest mercantile
houses?both as to the building
and the volume of business done
?is the Farmers' Supply Co.
This building, which was completed
and ready for occupancy
January 1, 1907, is a solid brick
structure, two stoiies high, dimensions
63x100 feet. The
lower floor is divided by a partition
wall into two stores, one
30x100 feet, being a wholesale j
and retail grocery store and the j
other.25xl00feet. contains an up- ]
to date line of hardware. The j
immense room overhead is used j
for storage purposes and is con- j
nected with the stores below j
by an elevator, which will soon <
be installed. The lot is large
and roomy, which is a distinct
advantage in a business of this
kind, there being a double
driveway 14 feet wide and also
stalls and hitching room for the
accommodation of the public.

handling- the goods is reduced
to a minimun, there being large
double doors wherever needed.
The building was constru cted
with an eye to comfort and
convenience.
The Farmers' Supply Co is a
joint stock company, backed by
some of our county's strongest
business men, the officers being,
Messrs Hugh McCutchen, president,
