" " '1 1 :__ .u... u II ail cue muuuutiuo tuai been made out of mole hills during the recent campaign in the low country could just be made; to stand, Asheville and Saluda would have to go out of business, and the low country people could all have a summer resort at home. But every sweet has its bitter: there wouldn't be any land left for cotton. - - . The Two Views. It would be difficult to conceive of anything concerning which *'<? ? 'o ov>r>Vi o HifParonno nf nnin- I i li ci ^ mm ouvu (? uiiavavuvv v* i ion ms to the condition of our country at this time. There is evidently a serious lack of careful discrimination or conscientious estimation in the application of measurements and standards by which one or the other of the two great political parties in this country estimate its preseut outlook. The Republican platform, as announced a few weeks ago, puts the Euglish language to the sever-1 est test to which it has purhaps ever been subjected, by the use of our strongest adjections in the inperlative degree, in painting a picture of the present state of prosperity that foams and sparkles and overruns all the edges of our National domain, North, East, South and West, and piled to enormous hights in the middle. * * iL - i TTl It is no wonaer mat rviuge, | Princes aud potentates of foreign lands peer with anxious and longing eye through the bars of their narrow and empoverished confines when there is spread before them inch a view of this land of the free and the home of the brave,! flowing with the peace and plenty | of milk and money. According to that document, coming as some might suppose, from the highest authority in the , nation, everything is just as it should be and all that could well be desired, and all that re mains to be done is to retain tbe republicans in power to keep it that way. On the other hand the Democratic platform points out many wrongs that need to be righted jn^py defects, short comings and abuses in the administration of affairs abuses and defects which if not speedily remidied will re it. rrv, AAn rf nf I BUlb 111 UIOOOIC1 X UV l/VUl 1/ V/l I final appeal for the determination of this question, as to whether everything is as it should be or not, is the people who will render their verdict by the ballots they cast this fall. The campaign is likely to be one of the liveliest we have had in many years and the present indications are that it will be a close race. "When any party in power becomes thoroughly satisfied with its record, cannot see its defects or is unwilling to acknowledge that it has any, then it is time for the * people to try something else and they will uneually do it. State Politics, Toe voters of this State will j do well to keep steadily in mind f the only available sources of re- d lief from any and all existing or ^ imaginary political ills. However '1 economical the views of a Gover-! t . 10 nor might be he is powerless in \ the hands of an extravagant ' and reckless legislature and sen- ? ate. A Governor is placed in a a verv embarrassing situation when * ? c bv the extravagance of the Gen- J v eral Assembly he must either raise the taxes or bankrupt the State 1 Our remedy is in sending to the ; legislature or senate men who g will there practice the economy ? which they preach on the stump, and cut out those who hare fail- ^ ed to make good when they were a in position to do it, as some r have been for years. Another surprise. On Tuesday m> tho 14jfrj J at 7 o'clock, Dr walkiug briskly down nue and, on meeting & the corner, intimated th serious was the matter .. H Kennedy's. At o'clock, when the interest had reach- ic ed its hight of intensity. Rev W H o Hodges of Clinton, clad in the robes that add grace aud dignity to his ^ high calling, entered from the hall and took his solemn stand in the v parlor. A silence fell upon the s< scene a silence like that after an | April shower, lasting perhaps two seconds, then a slight rustle like the t< moving of evening zephyrs, when 8 there stood facing the preacher the ^ victor and victim of a seven years' f, battle. c C; Mr T-.ur.inu8 Montcomerv and Miss 0 J Fannie Kennedy are married, and ^ they start on their life's journey s with the best wishes of their host of p friends.
