s \ WONDERFUL RESOURCES OF OLD WILLIAMSBURG. WE ARE IN TiiE MIDST OF GOLD FIELDS THAT ONLY NEED DEVELOPMENT TO YIELD FORTUNES. . 'There is a time iu the tide of affairs llTWh man's life, which, if - rJrf" n , 211 I 1 ^ taken'at its coou win ieau vu iw Saccess," etc. This time, in the opinion of the writer, is upon us now. Its voice Hjv , cries aloud to every one. Shall we ji.not ^ear ||rg, 4, The casual,or close observer, castV v!? ing his eye over the landscape for a radius of eight or ten miles around tbis town may see spreading out be: fore him a light, sandy soil, not too well adapted to the cultivation of cotton and corn, except wher^ under the free use of fertilizer it'has been made to vield and that more abundantlv, aud he with wonder inquires, "What use can be made of all this light waste of soil ? " How can I, ? - 5 L _ 1 i where i aave maae sucn luveanucuto, make it pay? Can a town situated in such a community thrive? My dear inquirer, do you realize that we are in the midst of gold fields ! Yes, gold fields. And how ? It is just such lands and soils as we L have described here that millions jjf and millions of dollars in gold have f been made from by tobacco raising. Just such lands as have made Henry ' - county ofVirginia famousjthat have , made the Pee Dee and Pudding X swamp sections of our own State to be known far and wide; that has made Mullins the Danville of South Carolina. But each of these sections had to be developed into what they now are, just as when the discovery of gold has been made the work of digging it out begins. Warehouses were built in these several floMmus or nlarps for the handling of tobacco and in this way the community was encouraged to plant the "golden weed." As the result of (vvi a suc^ Hn exPei'ieuce the community KL . is not only prosperous and the towns thriving, but farming lands have advanced more than 100 per cent iu ' value. I have in mind now one such community where 297 acres of land sold for nearly $20,000, when previous to the tobacco production in that section it could have been bougnt for $f-,000, Just such transformations will take place here among us. We have the soil, what ' * * -e j.u_ we Deecl is ine support, ui mc uuoitiess man and the entire community. In order that these things that appear dreams may be realized it is absolutely necessary to have a warehouse, and then the surrounding ? .. ... country should have support and eni couragment in cultivating the crop. With soils adapted to the production of such crops that will give new business life to our town and our community at large, cannot we hope to have the support of each and every business man ? Before the cultivation of another crop begins let us get together and discuss this matter among ourselves and resolve to make our own town "one among many," of those as have prospered with just such existing conditions. Let us throw ourselves into the 4'Tide," and seize "Time" by the forelock and see if this "Flood" will 1 not lead ou to success. Success to our town success to our communi ty. G. A. M. rA Beautiful Picture. Did you ever notice how really beautiful gum chewing makes a girl appear ? Take her de facto, and gazing steadily, one eannot find J a more ideal picture. With a sharp * click ! click ! her teeth, so white and pearly, are clashing together as with ' y?Airic h crW she masticates her cud. j WT"" fc," > Then, too, oue can note her healthI tinted, well rounded cheeks as they grow a little more rotund through 1 the material assistance of a big 1 "hunk" of gum. And really, who can imagine a fairer spectacle than that of her dainty up-turned nose,as it gently rises and falls in wave-like undulations over the abysmal depths revealed at each pressure against the mass? Oh, how deliciously tempting that rosebud mouth is as the maiden fills it with a soft, pliable chunk, and champing like a festive goat revelling in the luxuries of the succulent tomato can, she greets you in tones husky with gum.
