. * t I ANOTHER TRIP UP THE RIVER. Poor Conrad Tells of Scenes and Days In Years Long Gone By. klngstree, Julv 8:?Editor County Record, Dear sir: I have just returned from a cruise to the upper waters of Black river. I j went up to the mouth of Pudding j swamp for a load of shingles, and * bad in tow the large flat boat belong-1 ing to Mr P B Thome. We left j the landing at Kingstree about 10 O'clock on Friday, the 3rd of July, j anil moilo tRo frin si iliet,?r?pp nf OS miles, in seven hours, which I conlider very good time. We had to tow a large flat boat 13feet wide and 50 feet long. We were overtaken by a severe rain and thunder storm "with lightning very sharp, but we bad made preparations for it and bad put up the awning over the engine and our baggage and provisions. The boys all huddled under j the awning and 1 had a large umbrella which I kept over me and steered the boat up the river through the storm. The boys all managed to keep dry. We had a pretty fair time. We stopped at a high sand ridge about three miles below Montgomery's lake, one of my old and favorite camping places in my young days when I felt strong, and it gave me so much joy those days to float down the river on a raft or flat boat for Georgetown with the provision box packed with biscuits, bam, sausage, potatoes, custards and good coffee. That was the life for me and I like to follow it still. Well, as I said, we went up to the mouth of Pudding swamp with both boats and we pitched our tent there on the bank of the river at the place ' where I have had many happy days. 1 once owned that tract of land but it belongs to Mr Young at the present. Many have beeu the fish fries, | Bwimming and frolicking on that j famou3 old bank, and think of the j pretty girls that have spent their! pleasure moments with their sweet j hearts. I look away back now through mist of memory and tears j and with a sigh of sadness as I stand ; on the bank of the old river and think of the ones I so often met J aDd ask of the winds of Robert Epps, Samuel Burgess, Henry Mc-; Elveen, Lou Mouzon, Peter War-! sham, John Daniel, James Readon,! James Epps, Daniel Evans and a j fco&t of them, all of -whom always had a kind word for Conrad: and I . . ... am never more to behold them, never hear their gentle voices again. I: alone am left to tell the tale. I stood there viewing the river as it J flows along like the stream of life; bearing on its way the pieces of driftwood, some large, some small,: some heavy, some floating along quietly, heavy, and soon will sink oat of sight, some light and whirl- j ing around, may drift for sometime ! or may strike some obstruction and go to the bottom to rise no more. Well, after our camp for the first night at Pudding swamp we returned down the river toMouzon's bridge, | where the voung folks had a picnic ; on Saturday. There were about thirty young ladies, all quite pretty, and several nice looking young men some from Kiugstree, and they ? had a nice dinuer. The boys and myself were invited to join them, which we did with pleasure. Mr Young, who lives near Mou zuu s unuge utar iue picnic gruunu, beard as coining on our way up the river Friday afternoou a?d met us with some tine watermelons, which were thankfully received and enjoyed yery much. I visited my friend, Mr Wilson Mcintosh, and spent Friday night with him aud Saturday night I spent with my old and much esteemed friend honest old Kuff Mouzon, a visit I never enjoyed more in my life. His wife is an estimable ladv and it is a real pleasure to be in her company. I had . never seen all of their children and you can have some idea of the pleasure it gave me for those children to come up one after another and speak to me as if they had known me all this time. I also met my old friend, Mr D K Mouzon, Dunk, as we call him. He and I were boys together. I could say a good deal more about, the kind hearted Mouzons, but will speak about them at another time. I took dinner with my old friend, f Taken from tl By the Authoi ILLUS This famous no1 Be sure you read the Monthly Statement FOR Al Dispensary No. Location Kingrstree 1 Academy 1 Lake City 2 Acline Ave Scranton 3 E. I spent the night with one of the sons, Charlie, a ' jolly good fellow. t We had a good trip up the river., i It was quite laughable to see the 1 boys fighting the wasps. I never t saw as many wasp nests. Nearly t all the ironwood branches hanging t over the water had one or two nests 1 upon them some of them very c large. The boys would presist in ] knocking them down.
