y OUR IVIOl wwv\v*v*ww Quick Sa ?AND I Small Pro POOR CONRAD VISITS |> CITY BY THE SEA. J t SCENES OF BOYHOOD DAYS- WOUDERFUL CHANGES-FOND RECOLLECLIONS. mffts mn rnmbinf WbblV VKV VVMUilWM* Editor County Record : I have * had a pleasant trip to my birth- 3 place, the City by the Sea. How * the old place has changed since my * boyhood days! I had no one to accompany me around so I went from ^ place to place by myself. Of course l-it would have been of little interest J to some of the young people to show 0 them around from the Battery to 1 Line street and from the marshes of the Cooper to the Ashley river, the places where I went to school, the 0 different creeks where I went swim- v ming, the marshes where I hunted ^ the marsh hens' nest, the place where J1 the bad bovs and mvself used to help 1] ourselves to old Mr Day's sugar a cane without asking for it, roving up and down the two roads leading 0 from King and Meeting streets and a what was called "up the road." Mr Editor, very little of my life ^ -was spent in Charleston after I was thirteen years old, but there were ^ many scenes and trying times a crowded in those few short years of a Poor Conrad's time. Yes, I was all 1 alone in the dear old City by the 0 Sea. The name is so appropriate. 1: I strolled aloug many of the streets 3 that were once the outskirts of the ^ city but uow elegantly pared with 3 handsome buildings on both sides, g street cars whirling by where a few 3 years ago the sand was seyeral inches F ?deep. I passe I some of the churches ^ ^here I went to Sunday school, also a the place where my mother and v father are buried. I took a look at 1 the old Market that was once such v a lively business place but now a sad c ?nd gra^e-vard looking place. Did v . not -even see any of the old buzzards ^ around?all gone. I never fail to go by the corner of Charlotte and Elizabeth streets where I had the hardest fight of my life with an Irish y boy. I write about a good many things that may seem small to big people a but we were, all of us, children once, s I went over to Sullivan's Island to 1 see the soldiers'encampment. I was J a soldier myself once, so was my i father. He was in the Indian war t Ir. "Clnri/^Q T mpf sprpral nf mv an- J quaintances from Kingstree. Some seemed surprised to see me. Some asked what I was doiDg down there. They did not seem to know that I was on my old ground. I spent two nights with my son. He is employed by the Southern liailway. I also had the pleasure of visiting the Citadel, and was rejoiced to meet Col Asbury Coward, the superintendent, now resigned. He was quite glad to meet me, although it has been 46 years since I saw him. Colonel Coward is every inch a soldier. I remember him so well in Virginia the first two years 1 of the war. It made me feel so proud ^ always when I was detailed on $ brigade guard to be drawn up in t line with the others in front of the . Colonel. He had such a fine soldier- j like bearing. He was quick-spoken, j When giving a command to the :guard he would not say "Attention t Guard" but "Attention Guad," not "Shoulder Arms" but "Shoulder Ams." I had quite a long talk with him. He was wounded at the battle c of Sbarpsburg. as well as myself. 2 The Colonel looks to be in excellent i health and more active than 1 ex- s rTO =J YOL iles We apf be to pleas 'fits >ected to see him. I could write a jood deal more about the old city, >ut will reserve the rest for another ;ime. Yours as ever, PC. Surgery in the Public Schools. Editor County Record: The ime has arrived w* '11 public chools should be well he nrimarv treatment t is well known that ser. ?even death?is often p ly the proper attention to iometimes very slight bru )unctures result seriously f( >f prompt and proper attei sTail punctures frequently resu ock-jaw, pin scratches pr'blood poison," etc. These, anu ther wounds, unless affecting u ital organ directly can be readily lealed if given proper attention, but t so often happens?nearly always, q fact, that it is impossible to do nything that is really needed. An outfit suitable for all ordinary ccasions, including the common utiseptics, aseptic bandages, syringes, orcens, etc., is procurable at all rug stores and is cheap. One teacher in every school should iave a knowledge of the properties ud application of the most useful ntiseptics, and of the principles of reatmeut of wounds, fistuloe and ertain common skin iufections. This s the more imperative in the rural chools, some of them many miles rom a surgeon. There should be a tatute requiring every teacher, reardless of whether or not he or he holds college diplomas, to pass a described examination indicating lis or her efficiency in the science nd art of simple surgery. This k ould not in any way hurt the pracice of the professional surgeons but pould add much to the average life >f mau. It really seems Strange that ire should have been so long negectful of this matter. Rosemont. NO REASON "F?R IT. Fhen Kfngstree Citizens Sh?w the Certain Way oat. But pepsin digests albumen only. It is but one of the elements needed. Starch, fats and phosphates each require something else. Then half of digestion is done in the bowels, and pepsin can't do that. It requires many ingredients to form a perfect digester, and they must be in liquid form. Kodol has all those ingredients. It does all that the stomach does?all that the bowels do It digests any food?any mixture of foods?completely. Partial digesters give only halfway help. There is always some food left to get hard, and irritate the stomach lining. That irritation, even though 6light, continues the inflammation. That is why the stomach fails to regain its strength.
