The legislative delegation met
Monday in Lake City and agreed
to recommend as successor to
Dr J L Bass, Mr D J Epps of
Kingstree. The entire board
now are : W E Snowden, Ben
son; J E Brunson, Lake City and
D J Epps, Kingstree.
Kingstree continues to grow.
The salary of our efficient postmaster,
Mr Louis Jacobs, has
been raised from ?1,300 to ?1,400,
based on the increased business
of the office. We wish Postmaster
Jacobs could get a salary of
?3,000 to make him comfortable
in his old age.

Kingstree will probably have
a Chinese laundary in the near
future. A Chinaman named!
"Willie Chin"'" was here from;
Florence Tuesday and rented a
building for the purpose of
operating a laundry. Such an
enterprise is needed here and
no doubt will receive the hearty
support of the town.
Governor Ansel has appointed :

Governor some time ago. This
appointment is made on the recommendation
of the Williamsburg

There have been shipped this
year from here about 5,000 bushels
of beans, which brought fair
prices, and the amateur truckers
are much elated. Kingstree l as
overslept her rights many years j
in the way of trucking, but we
are assured that next season
she will be on the market. .Mr. J
\V. P. McCiill is the pioneer in'
the trucking industry here and
deserves credit for setting an
example ^worthy to be followed.

The incuu.* that led up to the
li?covery and the circumstances surounuing
it are curious and interestug.
A few months ago so-called
'loadstone" was sent to the bureau
"v,l industry with a request
p owner that it lie tested
i ideally as a cure for rabies. He
ned in his letter accompanying
he madstone that it had been used
uccessfully in several cases of in:ipieut
hydrophobia, but he desired
hat it should be tried under the
lirection of competent scientists.
The request induced, thedepartnemt
officials of the pathological
livisou to institute an inquiry into
uadstones in general and the one
eceived by the department in paiicular.
That investigation has been
oncluded and the report ot it
outains importaut facts. It shows
hat the madstoues are obtained from
he stomachs of certain wild and
lomestic auimals. Many of them are
ormed from matted hair which the
.nimal has licked from its body and
wallowed; while others are composed
f vegetable fit'e have been formed ino
a ball in the stomach.
For generations those ' 'atones"
lave been used to prevent hydrophobia.
They are simply applied to the
rounds cau.sed by the bite of a dog
r of a cat, ths suppjsitioa being
hat if they adhere to the wounds a
ure is certain. Cases are known ot
lersons who have made extended
ournevs and paid considerable sums
f money merely for the apphation
of the madstone.
In its report the pathological di
isiou warns the public that the mud
tone is no possible avail as a preentire
of rabies or anything else.
L'he report says that as a specific for
abies the madstone "is of no greater
alue than that of a piece of blotting
>aper applied in the same manner."
Mirther along the report says: The
ipplicatiou of madstones gives the
inenlightened public a false sense
?f securiiv, and their use should be
liscouraged by all possible means."
It was in connection with the inpury
that the discovery was made
hat hydrophobia was increasing
ilarmingly. The disease is not conined
to any particular section of the
Jnited States but is general 1 prevaint
throughout the country. The
eporton the subject strongly recorinends
that all dogs be muzzled,
aid the declaration is made that the
Iisease cannot be stamped out until j
logs are muzzled for a period of ,
everal years. The experience of
ome European countries is cited to
how that only by the muzzling of
logs can the disease be absolutely
radicated.
It is pointed out that a notion is;
