Shortly after 2 o'clock Sunlay

Just here it is meet and

f the fire-fighters. It was
fflcient, intelligent and suc:essful
and too much praise

The negroes of the town renlered

The two stores burned were

MYSTERY AT CADES.
Dead Body of Negro Infant Dragged
About Town by Dogs.
Cades, May 15: ?The mysterious
find on the morning of the 14th
inst of a dead negro infant, which
was being dragged about in the
town of Cades by dogs, remains a
mystery still. The town investigated
the matter as fully as possible,
and the coroner gave the matter his
attention, all to no avail. The negro
womea of the town were called
for examination,' and one woman
who was tardy in response to the
call, was locked up. No suspicion
rests upon any individual at this
writing, and there is no probability
of locating the guilty mother in
town.
The skull of the deceased was
crushed, and from other evidence it
seems to be a case of cold-blooded

out-of-town mother would have
brought her murdered child to town
for hiding. The most natural hypothesis
on which to base a conclusion
at this time is that the child
was thrown from a passing train,
and its mother will never be discerned.
The nude child was well developed.

,Pl*ED RUNAWAY HORSE i (
By Raising an Umbreiia in Front of .
Frighteced Animal.
We have heard it stated that <
an umbrella suddenly raised
would stor> a mad doir. but un
X " '
til the feat was performed within
our observation we did not r
know that an open umbrella]!
would stop a run-away horse.
Tuesday morning- a horse
hitched to a light wagon got
away from the driver and came !
down Academy street at a live- 1
ly clip, when Mr P G Gourdin,
who happened to have an umbrella,
stepped in front of the
runaway animal aud hoisted
his parachute.
To the astonishment of the
crowd of on-lookers the horse
slowed down and finally stopped c
until the driver came up and resumed
control of the outfit.
Whether it was by hypnotic
influence, or whether the open .
umbrella caused the borse to
halt in i*s career we are unable
to say, but stop it did and a
dozen or more people were pres
ent to witness the fact.
