Bring Your Cotton Seed.
We have closed down our
ginneries for the season because
there is no more cotton to gin.
We are paying $20 per ton for
good, sound, dry cotton seed,
delivered at our mill. ^
To those who do not rare to I
sell their seed for cash we are
offering a strictly high grade
meal in exchange. Onr rate of
exchange at the mill is 1600 lbs.
of meal for one ton of seed. It '
is a conceded fact cotton i
seed meal is a cheaper and j
more effecti\e fertiliser than |
cotton seed. According to j
chemical analysis of each* 886 j
pounds of cotton seed meal |
are equivalent to 2000 pounds j
of cotton seed, but owing |
to the superior mechanical |
condition of meal, it is safe to i
assume that 800 pounds of meal i
are the full equivalent to one ton j
of cotton seed, therefore, what- i
pwr pwpss above 800 nounds of !
" M.' ~ I
meal the farmer gets in exchange ;
for a ton of seed is so much clear
profit to him in comparison with !
using the ton of seed directly as
a fertilizer. You can readily see
that by exchanging jour seed
with us you realize nearly 1J0
per cent on the transaction. j
Bring your seed to us and not
make the mistake of getting,'
inferior meal elsewhere in exchange.
Our meal is open for inspection.
Samples sent on application.

SELECTION OF SEED CORN.
Correspondent Thinks an Experiment
Station Would Help.
SditorTHE County Recohd:
It is refreshing to read the article
jy Mr Eaddy on the selection of
leed corn. We have read so much
)f late relative to the new county
schemes, but practically nothing
baa appeared in our county paper
concerning the great industry which
supports.the world and makes pos
3ible tbe formation of new counties.
While I never have believed that
the production of cotton had mnch
to do with tbe price of that commodity,
yet it is very apparent that
by far too little attention has been
given to tbe production of corn and
other grain and forage crops through
out the Booth.
This is the proper time for leaking
tbe germinating tests of the eare- .
intended for seed as outlined in Mr _ $
Baddy's contribution last week. Of
course Only partial results coald be
expected from such a t~et to begio
with ears taken from tbe bio that
have been practically excluded
.fmm th* air for the past several
mouth*. Nevertheless it is better
to make the test rejection the ears
whose kernels show a germiuatioQ
deficiency, that lack uniformity,
size, properly tilled butts and tips,
compactness aud uniformity of kernels,&c
, <fec. This is all can be done
now so far as the selectiou of 6eed
is concerned, since no one can tell
the stalk that produced the ear and /
I this has perhaps a greater influence
upon the vegetation and reproduC'
tive power of the seed thau any and
all other factors. It is foi this rea- '//j
son that seed corn and it is more
trueof corn than any other field crop
should never be purchased except
in the ear and then only from a /jig
liable breeder; unless the field is inspected
in person before the enop ia*
harvested. Then, too, the farmers*
uugub iu ur uiriiii uuut;t:?u4iig. \aib?
purchase of seed corn a* high price vg
regardless of the name of the Weed- ^
er unless it be not more than one > %
hundred miles distant and even
then disappointment will almost
sorely follow if very different seasens
obtain. None of our cultivated
plants responds more quickly and
liberally to cultivation and breeding
than does Indian corn, and it is for -''1
this reason that homegrown corn ia jj
always the best for home planting* J
but,as suggested by Mr Eaddy.tbere r|
are hundreds of directions iu which
our corn could be improved and we
need to take advantage of the opporA
new experiment station is about
to be established at Jedburg near
Summerville and its benefits to the *
people in that section will be or
may be inestimable, but uo section , |
of our State would receive as mucb
from snch an institution as would
this, and our representatives should . a
bestir themselves towards securing .
an appropriation towards that end.-'
Nothing appeals more strongly to j
human nature as example and a.
model farm would be a great thing.
Yoors very truly,
Laurence H McCullough.
