MORE ABOUr SEED CORN.
How to Prepare the Seed Selected ,
For Planting. t
Editor County Record:?I j
desire to help Brother S O Eaddylj
prepare the seed corn. After he (
passes it through the test and shells ^
it go over carefully pick out r
every grain that seems to be doubt- t
ful. Pick by hand, just like pick- a
ing rice for diuner. ?
After this is done prepare some .
Boiling water and place as much as
a day's or a half day's planting in
au old metalic bucket that is well ?
worn or if not well worn ?
a
punch holes in the bottom ?
sufficient for the hot water to run t
through. Pour the boiling water *
on the corn and stir it with a stick u
until the water ruus out. A surer ?
plan is to follow the hot water with ti
some cold water, so as not to kill I
the life in the grain. to
If this is a new thing with you it
is better to prepare some and see if 8|
it will come up. My son killed n
some a few years ago. He poured II
the water on it and let it stand un- d:
tc
til it became cold and very few
grains came up.
ine piau suggested aoove win not
hurt and you will be surprised to ^
see how healthy the corn will more
off when planted and how little of it
will be destroyed by insects. ^
I have been convinced for years
that we plant the insect with the jjj
corn that gives us most trouble. ^
'This is my own plan which I have
tried for years and last year I had a
fiue stand ot corn while my neigh- j,1
? bors were replanting and some even
planted a second time. ^
Try it and if it doesn't suit you

A MISSING BUTTON.

Cr?- :?t?' a.
i'heainw le of the
methods of the Frenc. etectives.
They look for the little t ws rather
than the staring ones. nlike the
English and American detectives,
they often do not wait to get irrefutable
evidence before charging a
man with crime, but first charge
him with the crime and play upon
him so that if he is guilty he is led
to? confess.
Some time ago a woman was murdered
in Paris, and from her room
were stolen 750 francs in money,
her watch and jewelry. Two brothers,
George and Paul Amot, had
been seen near the house. The
night of the day after the murder
was committed M. Ilamard, chief of
detectives of Paris, entered a wine
shop where the two brothers were
drinking. To the man's amazement
he arrested George, charging him
with the murder.
''You have changed your coat,"
he said to the man, a safe guess if
he had committed the murder. "It <
was gray this morning, and there
is blood on it."
"My nose was bleeding," replied
the man.
"From excitement, I suppose," ,
6aid Barnard, "excitement caused ,
by your robbery of Mme. Lucas yesterday
evening." 1
"I was nowhere near Mme. Lueaa 1
last night," said the man, becotn- 1
ing very pale.
"You lie!" roaTed Hamard. "Look
at your left boot V
Everv one saw the third button' ,
from the boot was missing.
"Here's the button," said Hamard,
producing one. "It was found
in your victim's blood. Confess!""
The man confessed. As Hamard
afterward said, he had guessed themurderer.
The detection of the
missing button from the man's shoewas

Military Marches.
In military music the march occupies
a prominent position and has
been employed not only to stimulate
courage, but also from about
the middle of the seventeenth century
to insure- the orderly advance
oi troops. One- of the earliest in- .
stances of rhythmical march is the
Welsh war strain, "The March of .

posed to have originated during the <
dege of Harlech castle in 1468. In
England the military march was of
somewhat later development. Sir
John Hawkins m his "History of
Music" tells us that its characteristic
was dignity and gravity, in
which respect it differed greatly
from the French, which was brisk
and alert. And apropos ci this
subject the same author notes a
witty reply of an Elizabethan soldier
to the French Marshal Biron's
remark that "the English march, ,
being beaten by the drum, was slow, j
heavy and sluggish." "That may !
be true," he said, "but slow as it is J
it has traversed your master's coun?- !
try from one end to the other."? ;

ing startling figures:
Michael Angelo, he found, was
paid only about $40 a month while
he was at work on his cartoons of
the battle of Pisa. Leonardo, who
acted as his assistant, received the
same wage.
Correggio received less than $10
for his "Christ In the Garden,"
while Carracci's "Resurrection"
brought its painter still less. Albert
Durer was seldom paid in cash for
his pen and ink portraits. A bag
of flour, a pair of boots or some
such equivalent satisfied him.
Rembrandt, "the mightiest genius,"
received as his highest price
under $500 for his "Night Watch."
Valesquez worked chiefly for the
Spanish government. He was paid
on an average $35 a picture.
