(Published by Recent ) Winthrop college has captured the general assembly and the dormitory wanted by President ' - i a iu? u~ > t'uunbua tiiiu uitr uuaiu ui n ^ tee", is a certainty. As one ot the members of the general assembly remarked, the successful work of every member of the faculty, aided by the countless letters sent out by the graduates, brought success. The occasion of the visit of the general assembly to Winthrop college was the observance of the birthday of General Robert E Lee, and while here the visitors were the guests of the Winthrop chapter, Daughters of the Confederacy. A special train, having on board 210 passengers, members of the general assembly and many ladies, and under the per? l /~i~i suaai ttidrjjc ui \^ui. iiuuci i. Hunt, the assistant general pasBenger agent, and Mr Lusk, the / division passenger ;?gent of the Southern railwa)*, left Columbia at 7:30 o'clock yesterday and made a remarkably fast run. The special was run into the yards ot the college on the special side track and on dismounting were met by the Daughters ? of the Confederacy and by President Johnson, Every detail for handling the large number had beeu arranged in advance and there was not the slightest confusion. The visitors went direct to the auditorium where -the seats wer# arranged by xounties. President Johnson then announced that the guests would be divided into four sections, each section to be taken on a * - f - ? ? ? /\f VMII 1 rl _ tour 01 lQiipCLUUU Ui luv. uunu ing and starting from a different point. This would save confusion. For three hours those who have never visited Wintfcrop were amazed at the perfect system, the smoothness and ease with which the institution with nearly 500 pupils was conducted. On all sides the visitors were met by these students, who appeared to take as much interest in the affairs! of the college as President Johnson hi.nself, and that is saying a great deal. In the kindergarten department, conducted by Miss Macfeat, who has done so much in advancing child pducation. the tinv tots went through their exercises and up<|T stairs the model school taught practical things in a practical way to the pupils of the higher grades. It ran so smoothly that it did not need the assertion of one of the senators that Winthrop always ran that way. At 2 o'clock dinner was served in the large dining room. With the exception ofjthe young lady members of the Winthrop chapter, Daughters of the Confederacy, every pupil was seated also and there was room for others. The hall had been beautifully decorated. At the head of the hall were the large oil portraifs of Gens. Lee and Jackson presented to the library some time ago and used ap -. y, . The menu was a delightful one; in fact, the entire affair be- J ing of such a nature that the! , chapter and the housekeeper, Miss Cobb, were thanked afterward by a rising vote. Editor County Record:?It seems to be a settled fact that j all Williamsburg is of one mind in believing that we are in much Deed of a new county down here, and sentiment is strong in our favor. Our friends and neighbors are worked up, and we note they are holding massmeetings over in Johnsonville. What does all this mean, Mr. Editor? Are they really going to give us a new county, or are the boys only "jollying"?makfng a cat's paw of us. We note that "Surveyor" in your last issue is in hearty sympathy with us, and as he has talked with "many men ot ' many minds" the county over, it is natural to suppose he has a great store-house of information; therefore, we beg his pardon | and ask that he share up this knowledge with his fellow- ( countymen that we may be the i better made to understand the , whole questiou. What is the area requirement for a new county, and can we meet it? ] What the taxable property requirement and have we got i it? ' What the population requirement and can we supply that demand? I How many square miles in the tenitory yon suggest for a new 1 connty and bow much vrould it cut from Williamsburg, noting that the railroad runs seven ? ' - -i t- 4v.; miles ilLHJve kUUUlj uuc ai una point? What advantage- would a new county be to us in the face of the fact that -we have more time to go to the old court house than we have money toput in a new one? "~ If we build a cheap court house, the kind that has been, written about, to cost only fifty thousand dollars, how lonjf would it take to discharge this debt, with a two and one-half mill levy, taking the legal requirement of taxable value as a flat basis? I Would it pay us, for any reason, whatever, to raise the taxable value of our lands, knowing- that these lands cannot be used for years, the timber belonging to others? How would the question of location of court house be settled, seeing that we have neither towns nor villages? Wouldn't Morrisville or Dock be about the geographical center of the proposed new county? Who pays the preliminary expenses in engineering a new county scheme, such as survey, etc? Trusting that "Surveyor" will find no hesitancy in giving this information for public benefit, we await with expectancy. Progress. Dock, S.
