JAN. 30. 1903. | 1 Senator TillmtM) and John D Rockefeller bud a heart-to-heart talk the other day on a Pullman >, car, when according to report, the Pitchfork wielder said some plain ( things to the oil king as to the ( practical application of Northern philanthropy in the South. We publish the account of the * legislators' trip to Winthrop Col- , lege by request. We do not ap- ; prove of these junketing tours at 1 the expense of the State, especially when the axe to grind is so , conspicuously promtueut?viz., a $30,000 dormitory. Our correspondent "Progress" insinuates that certain people are trying to use the people of John Bonville as "cat's paws." If the implication be true, it would not be hard to locate the manipulators wUt> are after the chesnuts. Why would "Progress" make Johnsouville pay $50,000 for public buildings when llutledge proposes to put them up fo" $8,000? True the former would be nearer , the proper figure, but if Rut- , ledge can build a jail a >d court 1 house for $8,000, why so can ' Johnsouville. If Kutledge county fails we 1 yencure tne opinion cnac 111 jess than five years there will be a 1 new county with the conrt bouse somewhere near Johnsonville. On ( the Other band, should the former | project be successful the people ] of Johnsonyille will suffer the i same inconveniences fifty years heuce that they are laboriug under today. J So far as the area of the pro- < posed connty to be formed from 1 the lower part of Williamsburg * and the upper part of George- . town is concerned it is natural { to suppose that the promoters \ would come nearer getting it by \ carving from two counties than Butledge county wonld by trying ( to get practically all of its ter- t ritory from Williamsburg. 2 ^ Death of Ir.
