MAI WINDING-UP COMMITTEE i SPRINGS SENSATION.'! ? i| FODI DISfTNSART DIRECTORS ARREST- " ED, ALSO A LIQUOR ORUHNER? , MORE TO FOLLOW. t Accustomed as they are to sensations in connection with the State dispensary, the people of South Car olina were very much astounded yes- * terday to learn that M A Goodman, 1 an agent of a Cincinnati liquor * house, had been arrested and that ^ warrants had beeu-issned for the ar- s rest of others implicated in testi- s many produced at the hearing Tues- ' day. Some of those named in the 8 warrants are John Black, before hie N official connection with the pnrchas- n in& board of the dispensary,- L % W * Boykin and John Bell Towill, direc- ^ tors, J S Farnum of Cnarleston and others. As published yesterday c Goodman was released on $25,000 ^ tl surety bond backed up with the cash 1 to that amount. The dispensary commission ast night held a consultation asting about five hours with he attorney general and the pecial attorneys of thecommision and at lh30 held a short ession of the commission at the lotel Jerome. Nothing was iven out for'publication but re-1 elations of a startling nature lay be expected at most any ime as a result of last night's rork. While an adjournment of the; oinmissiou was taken until an. 30, it is not at all unlikely aat they will be called in pecial session at any date., eports received from detecves and special representaves of the commission now in ie field indicate that fully as iteresting revelations may be spected in the next few weeks s those which have already ?en given to the public. EXTRACTS OF EVIDENCE Leading to the Arrest, of Goodman and Others. Letter of Goodman to Barney Ehrlich, August, 1904,-when Goodman was changing- from the Commonwealth "distillery" to the house of Lllman: "Now tell Boykin on account of ray leaving here on September 1, 1 would be unable to pay anv commissions for purchases they make from !he Commonwealth, consequently under no circunstances buy anything from them- You might ask Bovkin's and Maj. Black's opinion if yon sbonld say anything regarding this to Towill." Protest of Chairman H H Erans againts purchases made at the August and Ifecember meetings, 1904, succeeding Good-j man's change of base: "3. Because the State dispensary is not in such a financial condition as to warrant th? ex periment cf purchasing nejwr untried and fancy brands ?f liquors. . *44. Because the representatives of the liquor houses selling said goods were m the city of Columbia during the , time . of said purchases soliciting orders, which is contrary to law and against the resolutions ol the State board of directors of the South Carolina dispensary." . Testimony of C C Davis before investigating committee, June 7, 1906: i Ans: Why, I think be (H H Evans) said that there were some cheap Jew houses getting more business than he thought was due. He told me that they were not letting his friends have the orders they should. He told me that he had his friends to give some money to those other commissioners (directors) and he and one or two others stood on a table to see them receive the money through the transom."
