MADE-SMALL SCHOOL DiS- " TRIl'TS PREFERABLE ; r I (The following ihi|kt \va> iva?t by < ountv Supenatencivot of education J t? M^lulltiui'li aunt mtt'Ung of county superintend* nt* u! education held In Columbia la-t week.) > The outlook for improved school conditions in Williamsburg county is promising. The school system is J not at present satisfactory, owing es- e pecially to the fact thai many of the iobool districts are unreasonably' * large, some of them containing near- ^ ly 100 square miles and having from y 6 to 10 schools for each race, all under the oversight of one set of trustees. 1 y 1: is now tbecustom, when a com- ? muuity wants better school facili- e tiefl, to petition for a one school dis- i r< trict and levy a special tax. With- ^ in a few years some 10 or 1 il such : ? I small districts "nave been formed in ! J this way, and in all such cases the y school conditions have been improved, as evidenced by better buildings, j longer school terms, more efficient. 1 Iceberg, and greater i?it<-rest snowed by patrons and pupils. The present county board of education beljeyes that dividing the \i COnnty for school purpose hjto one- J I school districts is necessary for a first class system, a ?d iu'euds to begifl jrork along this line at an early I h dty' W The increased interest in school | affairs among our people generally r is piobably the most encouraging ' sign of progress. The special tax levy for school purposes the coming year amounts to $9,300, almost dou I>bJe that of last year, ami this in- j urease is accounted for largely by i. Lreater number of districts imposing ||be tax. Every one school district B the county imposes a special tax lot one. Most of them reach the 4 | will limit, and Johnsonville district { By special act of the legislature, has ? tj^jrjjjijl special levy\ for running "" expense. .. * " Daring the present year a number lof good honses have been built iu different sections of the county. A $10,000 addition is now being built to the, Kingstree graded school. Lake City has recently moved into F their new $10,000 building. Scranton has just finished a $3,500 brick building. Johnsonyille district, a neighborhood 25 miles from the railroad, has erected and paid for by private subscription a building oosting something like $3,000. Wil* son district has made an addition to their already good building costing ^ some $800. Cedar Swamp school is cc now occupying quarters at a recent cost to the patrons of $800. Lake district has jnst finished by private means a $500 building, and the 5 patrons of one school in Mouzon, a large district, have built an ice house at a oost of $500. A number of other districts are making preparations for building good houses at an early * day. All- these schools bnt three are io rural sections, and are the result of the union of two or more small ? ? rr>t - . <.U~ I f SCOOOIS. J.H1B wors, eiucpi iu iuc case of Kingftree and Lake City, where they voted bonds, has been done bv means of private subscription supplemented by the aid of the . ! f mutyboaid of education, aN proded by law. ] think that lilt- act .*re referred to deserves much of lecredit forme good buildings we 3\v have. None of our schools has been able > take advantage of the High ehool act. We cannot hope to do lything along this line until the Id style large di-tiicts are ab-dishi.
