Substantial Appreciation.
It is pleasant to feel that
one's work is appreciated, especi
ally when the assurance takes a
form more substantial than mere
words. Very recently one of our
friends who had allowed his
inbscriptiou to bec<Ane two years
over-due come up and paid the
amount he owed, then he added
that he wanted to pay fifteen
oents interest 'for having kept us
out of our money twenty-four
months. While perfectly equitable?since
subscriptions are payable
in advance?this proposition
. J
was so unusual coat we nesitatea
to accept the proffered interest,
bar be kept insisting until at
length we were constrained to i
yield. Such a course of action is
unique in our newspaper experi.
ence, and goes to show how a"
newspaper is imposed on. The
average subscriber whose arrears
. are two years when be pays?if
he pays at all?assumes a look
of virtuous rectitude, as if to
say: "WeM, I paid you that
money when I could have beat
v j _ 11 ??
you out oc it just, as wen."
( Suggest interest to him and he i
would probably get insulted, and
yet be expect? ns to send him a
paper whose manufacture costs us two
dollar# a month, two whole
Jeeri?one hundred and fonr copies,
mark you?before he pays one cent,
and tben thinks he has earned a
title of grateful remembrance for
eren paying at the end of two
years?principal without interest
HnwAVAr. it ia ref/eflhini? to find a
deviation, albeit bat a single one,
from the law of gernral selfishnessin
a sordid world and we hope that
the example cited may prove so
OOntagioas as to become epidemic.

Lard Dapwnan and tka Hatter.
This odd story is told of the late
Lord Denman, who, on being reminded
by a west end hatter that a
small account was "overdue," visited
the shop and gave the manager
a legal reply to the request for payment.

him to be careful, "that this account
is overdue. Remember that a
bill of exchange or bill of acceptance
may become overdue, but a
tradesman's account never. A gentleman
pays when he thinks he will
or when he has the money. But, to
6how that no ill feeling exists, I
will pay the account and take another
hat."
Your Nerve History.
You are unconsciously writing a
history in your nerves, and this
history you cannot wipe out at will,
as you may wipe out a scrawl on a
blackboard. It endures, and it reproduces
itself. The thoughts ol
your mind, the purposes and impulses
of your heart, your passions,
your affections, your inspirations
and your beliefs stamp themselves
indelibly on your Dervous system
They cut channels of habit. They
react on your soul continually for
good or evil. They shape your character,
and your character is what
you are, what you will be always.?
Philip S. Moxom, U. u., in "ine
Form of Life."
