Thames and John Brunidi to haze Judge John D. Gilland's portrait painted and hnng in the court room. The oontract was let through A. L. Blanks and the picture has arrived. The painting is a magnificent pieoe of work,having been executed b? Mr. Rein hard t, an eminent artist of New York. The portrait was copied from a splendid photograph taken by Mr. A. L. Blanks. It will be hnng in the court room within the next few f few days. The picture will he aaciea to a ^ gallery containing the portraits of some of the most distinguished citizens of this city and county. There are now hang in the court room portraits of four eminent judges of the Warren county bar and two great citizens. The men represented in the gallery are: Judges John B. Guion, Jacob Shall Terger, Upton IM. Young and Warren Cowan and Sargent S. Prentiss and Col. Walker Brooke. Col. B. V. Col. Booth declared that by all means the paintings of Thomas A. Marshall, 1 * Horace H. Miller, William C. tfcjmedes and others should be added to the list. Before the pioture is hung in the coriH house it will be plaoed on exhibition in the show window of Wright Brothers. There will be no I formal exercisei in connection with ! the hanging of the pictures. Judge Gillaud died on the 13th of April, 1897. / In this connection extracts from The Post of that date, relative to the death of Judge Gil land, will be of interest: The following interesting sketch k of Judge Oilland is taken from the ''Biographical and Historical MemI ^ ories of Misu&sppi". | Judge J. D. Oilland, Judge of the ' ~ math Circuit Court District of MiaI&stippi, was born in South Carolina in 1849, the 4th in the family of six ohildren born to Bev. J. R. and Mary C. (Qiboes) Oilland, the ferner a Presbyterian minister and a teacher by calling, being a professor of mathematics in Davidson College, North Carolina, having also taught in many other places. Gilland, was born and reared, his education being reoeired in Jefferson College. The mother's people were descedSed from Robert Gibbet colonial Governor.of South Ciroliaa and the maternal grandfather, Wilmot S. Gibbes, was a physican of considerable note in Chester District, South Carolina. Mrs. Mary C. (Gibbes) Gilland was a granddaughter of Chaooellor DeSaossnre, of the Palmetto State. Judge J D Gilland was educated bv his father in his youth and began life for himself as a teacher. He went to Arkansas in 1868, and followed this calling in Mount Holly, Camden and College Hill, after which he rent to Missouri and read law at Palmyra. In September 1871, he came to Mississippi, and settled at Raymond, where he continued his stndy of law and was admitted to the bar in May, 1.872, and began practicing his calling at that place. He soon moved to Vicksbarg, however, and was located here J in constant practice nntill he war appointed to the bench in February. 1890. He had been very successful 1 in adjusting the differences of the I people of his district, and was an I eminent and able jurist and was I deservedly popular. He'was a self- I made man, and for a time was one of I the leading members of the Vicks- I bnrg bar, and was one of the most nonnlar indues in the State. Hei ?"r f?o ? was one of the incorporators of the People's 8arings Bank, of Vicksburg, of the Hill City Oil Mills, 1 was a stockholder in the Vicksbarg ; Compress Association, and was the owner of a fine home on Cherry street He was a member of the Knights of Honor, and was an elder in the Presbyterian church, in which be and his f&tnily were members* ; He was married in 1872 to Mrs. Emily J. An osyter sapper will be serred afterwards. The purpose is to supply the Salters school with a library. The school is making great progress under the management of Misses | Etta Jacobs of Kings tree and | and Mamie Commins of Ridge* | ville, SC, both of whom are I very popular with both parents I and pupils. The camp has recently taken in several new members and is in flourishing condition. Rev J J Tart, after a stay in this neighborhood, has decided to move near Kingstree. His home was formerly Marlboro county. , Mr and Mrs Fowler, of Marlboro county, are visiting relatives here.
