Local and Personal 9^ We are sending out a number of statements to subscribers in arrears. There are now on our books nearly 2,000 subscribers, many of whom have paid nothing in a year or lnntTAr Wa ?clr oil Jo ??V ooa an 1UC3C UC' I linquents to settle up as soon as possible. Each account is made out up to the nearest year or half year. It may be that some who get these statements have already paid; if so just call our attention to the fact and we will cheerfully make the correction. Ail we want is what is due us and not a cent more. But we do want that. There will be preaching in the Methodist church next Sun day at 11 a. m. and 7:30 p. m. Messrs Philip Stoll and H A Meyer attended the K of P district convention at Mullins this week as delegates from Kingstree lodge. Notwithstanding the delayed train about a dozen people from here went to Florence to see "Buffalo" Bill's show Tues' day morning. Messrs Hugh Pipkin and J E Ridgeway, of the Bloomingvale section, spent Sunday in town. Both these young men are well known and have numerous friends in town. There will be a hot supper at the home of Mr J 0 McCullough on Thursday night, 24th inst., for the purpose of raising money to furnish the new Cedar Swamp scbool building, i nej public is invited to be there. Several mornings this week frost was visible, there being a heavy one on Tuesday morning. Notwithstanding the fact that it fell over nearly all the cotton belt, the price of spot cotton has not advanced appreciably. Monday night the Black river trestle was ignited by sparks from train No. 89 and about fifteen cross ties and two "stringers" burned. The wrecking train arrived from Florence about 8 a. m. and in less than one hour the damage was re I We hate to be continually making apologies, but as we stated last week, several of our printing force have been unwell and are still sick. We have wired and written for printers but are still short. We are doing the best we can, and ask the indulgence of our friends, especially those who are in a hurry for job work orders. Mr E B Wilson, clerk in the comptroller general's office, has been in town several days this week, making his settlement with the county treasurer. In the last settlement there was an apparent shortage of over $2,000 on the part of the retiring treas9 ?rifflST ^ K ujss * ll Monthly Statement FOR THI I Dispensary No. Location Kingstree 1 Academy Lake City 2 Acline Av .-cranton 3 E. We are i pleased to state that a careful checking of the books show that General Johnson was not only not short in his accounts, but the county really owed him $31.50. The discrepancy was due purely to a clerical error, caused by the hurried examination that was made. Dnth of Ir. V- B Mu. Mr. Watson D Snowden passed away very suddenly Thursday nierhtat 8 o'clock at his boose at" Benson. Mr. Snowden was about 57 years of age. His wife preceded him in death some years ago. He leaves ten children, the eldest of whom is Mr W E Snowden, who is well known in town. The funeral services of Mr Snowden took place Friday afternoon at Cedar Swamp church. One of the handsomest buildings in Kingstree, and one that would do credit to any town several times the size of Kingstree is the just-completed two-story building erected by Mr F C Thomas, the enterprising stable man. The lower floor consists of two stores 30x80 feet while the upper floor is made into one large hall, which we understand is intended for a town ball and opera house. For an opera house the hall is admirably adapted, being equipped with a wide stage, dressing rooms, a rear entrance and the other various accessories of the Thes pian art. Kingstree has long needed both a town hall and an opera house and to have the ttfo in one is literally combining business with pleasure. We understand that a manager has been, selected for the opera house and that we may look forward to some good attractions in Kingstree during the long winter months. Heretofore there has been a dearth of such amusements here mainly by reason of the fact that there was no place where a first class company could find room to exhibit. Now that that obstacle has been removed we shall probably have some first class "shows ' and we feel sure th at the people of Kingstree and vicinity will give them a liberal patronage.
