A newspaper is the thing which
every person in town knows how to
run except the editor. It is what
should be an oven for "roasts" on
overy one except himself, members
of your family and a few of your
friends, for whom it should be a
sweet scented bouquet of praise.
It is a promoter of profanity if it
il not on the front porch when you
get down in the morning, and what
you tell the man who works on it
isn't fit to go into a decent person's
home.
It is what the young man who
borrows it from the saloon bar
"kicks" abont because it contaius
only oae sporting page and which
the woman tells her neighbor when
she takes it back is not worth subscribing
for because it has but one
page devoted to fashions and making
currant jam.
It is what the merchant threatens
to pnll his ad out of because he can*
sot have the run of the paper and
what the old subscriber declares
is gomg to the4,demnition bowwows"
because it is getting so that nothing
bnt advertising can get a position iD
it any more.
It is what you want to see the editor
to keep your name out of as
soon as you have settled with the
police juctice on the morning after- <
and to get your name into as soon
as the cards are issued two' weeks
before.

little white boys in this county are
making unnsually good records in
the cotton fields. Henry Blacktnan,
13 years old, son of Mr J W Black- i
man, of Rich Hill, picked 406 <
pounds of cotton day before yester- ;
day. Henry'8 little brother, 8
years old, picked 205 pounds the (
same day. A lad weighing only 65
pounds, son or Mr <j ju McManns,
of Antioch, picked 300 pounds of
cotton one day last week.

SOLICITOR WELLS SURPRISED FRIENDS
He and Miss Maude Wilson Were Married
at Gaffney Thursday.
A marriage of much interest took
place yesterday afternoon in Gaffney
when Hon Walter H Wells, of
Florence, and Miss Maude Wilson
of this city, were married at the
home of the bride. Rev S B Harper,
using the beautiful ritual of
the Methodist church performed

The bride is the second daughter
of Rev J B Wilson and is a beautiful
and accomplished young lady.
Mr Wells is one of the most prominent
young men in the State. He
is State senator from his cuonty and
has recently been appointed solicitor
to fill the unexpired term of John S
Wilson. The happy couple left on
No 38, the Southern's northbound
vestibule, for a tour of Northern

race parses to be given &t the 8tate
Fair this year will be the biggest in
the whole South. Something over
$3,600 will be the total amount of
purses for these great races this year,
and there will probably b<? a few hundred
more added by the time the races
start
Never before in the history of the
Fair association?for 39 years?have
the officials been able to get up such
flne races. Some of the best horses
on the popular race course will compete
at Columbia this season on the
Fair race track. The enthusiasm
among the owners and itralners in
South Carolina for home raised racers
Is at fever heat already. By the time
the Judges get ready to call "Go" at
the Fair Grounds the excitement will
be most intense. Some very fast
[ horses are already scheduled to run
| during Fair Week and the trotting
purses will bring some of Jhe most
renowned borses ever seen on f. Southern
track. Its a case of "money talks"
and the purses ofTered this year have
attracted hundreds of the big racers
frotn all over the country.
The entries for exhibits this year as
recorded are much -bove the average
of previous years. Partictlar attention
seems to be given to the agricultural
department Here will be seen
the best cotton and the best corn and
experiments for improving! stock and
all kinds of implements vil] be demonstrated.
It is useless to say that
thig Fair will be the best in the history
of .the association when such a

exhibitors?over $8,000 as premiums.

With reference to the story of
Byron's first invitation to dinner at
the house of the poet Rogers, in St.
James' place, which we quoted the
dther day, a corespondent reminds
lis that it had a sequel. Byron, it
will be remembered, refused every
dish, saying he took nothing but
biscuits and soda water and made
his meal of mashed potatoes drenched
with vinegar. Rogei-s completes
the story in his table talk. "Some
days after, meeting Hobhouse, I
said to him, 'How long will Byron
persevere in his present diet?* He
replied, 'Just so long as you continue
to notice it.' I cid not then
know what I now know to be a, fact
?that Byron, after leaving my
house, had gone to a club in St
James' street and eaten a hearty
