Obituary notices will l?e published free up to 10" w<>rds. <xcer?t poetry. ? All obituary poetry will be charged for at the rate 01 one cent a word. When obituaries are extended beyond 100 words count the words and enclose money or stamps to make up the difference. i Remember, we publish free only one hundred wordt> obituaries, tributes of Respect. Resolutions, etc., free. Also, only one obituary of the same person will be published free. This does not apply to news notices of deaths sent us as news. This notice will be strictly adhered to. THURSDAY. OCT. 3 1007. Keep the Money at Home. Suppose you dan buy froai Sears, Roebuck <fc Co an article for $1.00 that woulu cost you $1.50 from yonr home merchant; are you really the gainer? Deduct the express charges and yon have a fancied gain of twenty-five cents.Suppose the goode don't suit you? aod it's an accident when they do, as these concerns palm off on country "greenhorns" the stuff that their city customers would soorn?what redress have the out : ' of town patrons? You return the goods and they tell yon that they are damaged and charge yon. as such as they please, so that when jour money is returned (they all guarantee to give yon your money back) it is just about one-half of what yon are entitled to. Another view to take of it: Suppose you get hard up during the doll summer months, would you ask Messrs Sears, Roebuck ?fc Co. or Messrs Montgomery, Ward & Co. or Messrs R H Macy & Co, to credit yon until your crop was harvested? Well, hardly, and if you did they would laugh at .< you. . And, again, it is to be considered that every dollar that i3 sent away from a town or community impoverishes that community just to the amount that is sent off. There is such a community of interest in a town or country ntfgh borhood that every dollar .that goes out of circulation affects to # certain extent tne entire population. Another point to remember is this: Suppose there is a church to fee built, or any charitable enterprise needing aid, where would you go for money? How much would the catch-penny Northern houses contribute? Would not the home merchant and business man be the source from which you would count on getting the money? These are facts that are often overlooked and the moral is: "Keep the money at home." U?1 J VAt Ml' P/N+t/in A A VAN* A VVM |WUVli? "Hold your cotton!" That is the (slogan of both the Farmers ' union and the Southern Cotton association; and it would be well for the farmers to give heed to the advice of tnese two organizations. As is always the case at this time of the year the speculators, taking advantage of the rush of cotton to the market to satisfy pressing obligations, send broadcast the report that a tremendous crop has been made. Such a report is wholly unwarranted either by the government: figures or by any other available source of reliable information. Not less thf.n fourteen million / bales of cotton are needed to ^ supply tbe world's demand for the ^ South's staple product and i t is (j estimated that, the present crop /j will fall nearly two million bales ^ short of that figure. V \ vj That being the case every pound V of cotton put on the market should : bring thirteen cents or more, and y the farmer who sells his cotton \ for less than thirteen cents is ( sacrificing his own invests and ( playing into the hauds of 'Wall (j street speculators. (j Heretofore in Williamsburg coun- (j ty tbe farmer bad a good excuse (j for hurrying his cotton to market j| * ' ' ? ? ?. i ...j ne DBU uo pmue iu uuuec il auu ^ the deterioration caused by weath- j er exposure wouldj overbalance a ^ possible rise in the market. But this condition has been met by the * I public-spirited business men of . Kingstree and the surrounding country by building a cotton storage warehouse. Here at a very moderate cost you can store your cotton and hold it until the price suits you, and moreover, on your = ware house certificates you can borrow eighty per cent of the value of your cotton. Thousands of these ware houses are all over the cotton belt and they present a solid bulwark of defense against the onslaughts of predatory speculators who fix the price of cotton and probably never saw a cotton plant. The fight is on and if the farmers?or any considerable aumber of them?will stand shoulder to shoulder, victory is assured. Obituary Notices. There seems to be some misunderstanding existing among our readers as to the publishing of obituary notices, tributes of respect, resolntions of thanks, etc., netwstanding our weekly announce. men* that thav are to be Daid ? * J ? " " * for all over one hundred words in length. Nearly every day there 1 come to us obitnary notices, in ' nearly every case over the limit and sometimes containing a thousand wgrds, yet it is seldom indeed that anything is said about paying for excess words. Not only this but frequently we get two or three Obituaries applying to one person, and sometimes each year T after a person dies we are called on to publish an obituary, a sort of annual reminder. Now we have great respect for the feelings of everyone bereaved and are willing to do anythiug reasonable in the way of svmpa- f< thy. But it is to be remember- ti ed that a newspaper is a business * enterprise and its subscribers ex- u pect the news. It oosts money to a set type and it is a hardship on a ns to be put to the expense of p setting up two or thiee lengthy i ' obituary notices about ooe person, q On occasion we have actually had * to leave out several columns of r news matter already in type to ti make room for obituaries of persons who had died months before. _ * Again, we try to treat all our 81 patrons alike and if we were p called upon to publish two or three obituaries, one-half column b co two columns long, auuui ?*? ry ^ person who died in the county we would not have space for anything else at all. t It happens frequently that a o: number of rerses of poetry and ? whole hymns are appended to the ? obituary article. It costs us twice as much to put poetry in type as prose and we cannot afford to j publish it free of charge in (I obituary notices, so *hen poetry \ is added count the words and figure the cost at one cent a word.
