According to a headline in the News & Courier last week a Clarendon county farmer offered one hundred dollars per hundred to have his cotton pictcea. ir tms could be verified we feel confident that every scion of the Adamic race who holds down an editorial tripod would resign inStanter and join the merry harvesters of the fleecy staple. Uncle George'' Byars brought to The Ledger office yesterday a mon- , strous pumpkin. It tipped the scales at 31 14 pounds. "Uncle George" learned 10 raise these things in old York, where they can raise them without work.?(iatfney Ledger. That pumpkin might appear big in Cherokee couutv, but in Williamsburg it would be regarded as verv "onery." If Brother DeCamp will come over to Kingstree we will show him some pumpkins worth bragging about; for instance, that little speciman at the Farmers' Supply Co's that tips the beam at one hnndred and ten pouuds. HOMICIDE AT SINGLE. Negro Woman Shot From Ambush Possibly by Her Husband. Lake L'ity, beptemoer za:? Last Satuary night Jane Graham was shot and instantly killed at her home at Single, seven miles east of this place. There seems to be some doubt as to whether the killing was ( at the hands of Ben Graham, ' the dead woman's husband, of I of Lifrage Edwards, her paramour. The weight of opinion ( of the best men of that commun- j ity is to the latter view. Trou- , ble has been brewing quite a while among these people, i Jane seemed infatuated with ( "Life,"who is a widower, worked ( his crop and left her husband to cook and take care of the child- < ren and do the best he could | ( with his farm. On the fatal ( night Edwards went home with Ben, ostensibly to carry medi cine to Ben's sick child. Jane refused even to speak to her husband, but cooked a nice fish supper for Life, after Life had driven Ben out of the house. Af ter suppei the guilty pair spent awhile in the yard. While there Ben was seen near the hog pen* Life then fled towards his home ' followed by two loads of shot from Ben's gun, which, however, did no damage. Ben then went into the house and put a load into .a chair near Jane, who left the house with her girl, going towards Edward's house, a few hundred yards away. Ben left, going in the opposite direction. As Jane and the girl were 1 passing a clump of thick bushes, the woman was shot in the back by some one concealed behind these bushes and unseen by 1 the girl. The woman dropped dead. Magistrate Gaskins and a jury, of whom W F Kennedy " "~A V was foreman, held the inquest. The above is a general summary of the testimony. Tired mothers, worn out by the peevish, cross baby have found Cascasweet a boon and a blessing. Cascasweet is for babies and children, and is especially good for the ills so common in hot weather. Look for the ingredients printed on the bottle. Contains no harmful drugs. Sold by W L Wallace, M D. CHRONICLES OF LAKE CITY FOR THE PAST WEEK. EVERY DAY EVENTS AND PARAGRAPHS CONCERNING PEOPLE IN TOWN AND ENVIRONS. Lake City, September 24:? Mr C D Richey, whose home is now in Wilmington, N. C., was here the latter part of last week to see his sister. Mr 0 S Baldwin left here Tuesday for Columbia, where he will take the law course at the South Carolina University. He was joined by Mr Jack McElveen of Cades, who won the normal scholarship in that school. Two girls came to Mr S W Gowdy's Monday. We can't say whether or not he is wearing two smiles, but think not, as it is suggested that he has taken to the woods. We will ha\e tc build another school house in a year or two. This correspondent has nc record-breaking melons or pumpkins of his own production, yet he raised some right nice peppers. A few days ago he measured some half a dozen or more, winoii avcidgcu lcu inches in shortest circumference. One went 101 2 by 11 3-4 inches. They are of the "Ruby King" variety. There are about a hundred acres of upland long staple cotton around here. Dr J B DuRant sold a bale last week for 23 cents a pound, Mr S T Godwin has a gin especially adapted to ginning this variety of cot ton. The tobacco and cotton businesses have assumed such proportions that one covered platform can no longer accommodate these products. Hence the Coast Line has built another platform south of the station house and to this the tobacco will be transferred. Messrs W J Singleiary and J L Covington last week sold two (2)barns of tobacco for $884.25, clear check. That may seem incredible, but we have it upon good authority that it is a fact. During the last forty years of the nineteenth century our Southland suffered more calamities than any other noble land was ever called upon to endure, but we are now coming into our own, and twenty years from today the South will again dominate the entire United States. This is no idle brag, but a cold deduction from cold facts in sylogism framed according to the most inflexible laws of Kant. Well! well! Who would have thought our uBeau Brummel" would have wrought the theme for a washer woman's song? Yet such is the melancholy fact. The '"Immaculate," with a dainty (lamsel in spotless white on each arm, sauntering down McAlister street, totally oblivions to ea rtb, sea and sky ?rn other words, not caring a tbrip whether the sun would rise in the east or in Shoat Gaskins' turnip patch?t hey stepped off blithely into the guard house ditch. His,'head was the first part that struck and ploughed the mud like a Mississippi river snag boat, then the laces, ribbons, and so forth, promptly fob lowed into the sweet, oozing of the home of frogs, cooters and snakes. Suit, dresses and all went to the cleaning house and laundry.
