"We never repent of eating too
little," was 0Qe of the ten rules of
life of Thouias Jeffersou, president
of the Uuited States, aud the rule
applies to every one without exception
during this hot weather, because
it ir hard for food, even in
small qua -tities, to be digested when
cbe blood is at high temperature.
At'this 3eason we should eat sparingly
and properly. W e 8hould also
help the stomach as much as possible
by the use of a little Kodol For
Iudigestion aud Dyspepsia, which
will rest| the stomach by digesting
the food itself. Sold by Dr. W. L

ANOTHER "WIRELESS" #
FROM MOUNTAIN RETREAT.
REV. MR ERVIN TELLS OF DA1LT LIFE
"FAR FROM THE MADDING
CROWD'S IGNOBLE SWAT." ?
MONTREA.T, August 21:?I send a
you one more " wireless" message P
before I leave this mountain glen n
for l orne, where I hope to be a day s
or two before the first Sabbath of
September.
Montreat is a place where we all
can leara something. That part of ^
the programme iu progress now is as F
follows: At 11 a. m. daily lectures
bv Dr McPheeters of Columbia, on
' Christ's Methods and Principles as
an Interpreter of Scripture;" at 4 p.
m., "Pastor's Conference on Methods
of Church Work;" at 8 p. m.,
Lectures by Dr Crawford(of Louisville
Pres. Sem.) on "The Development
of the Messianic Idea in O. T.
Prophecy." These lectures are
somewhat heavy pabulum for popular
audiences; aud the people are
caught partly by the half-hoar
song service preceding. Something
"in lighter vein" was Powell Hale's
readings and impersonations last
Saturday evening. There has been
nothing belter on the programme
than our own McLee's sermon last
a i u?. rv?_ ^-Ai..~ s
ouuuav uij^uu \jui unu natulan is
Musical Director. Our own organist
of Williamsburg church is at
present organist here, so that South
Carolina takes a helpful band in the
[ work, and it is good to be here. '
This is 4 place of good fellowship.
You need no introduction to thope
you meet. The fact that you are
here is a certificate of character, and
guarantee of ^ood behavior. There
are nothing but uplifting attractions
here, not even a dance hall; no card
table: no resorts of vice; no blind tiger;
no licensed place where men can
"calmly drink aud jaw."
This is a restful place. It has
one essential of complete rest and
refreshing sleep?and that is quiet.
, When the daily labor of the cottage
bailders is done and the sun goes
down, or rather withdraws its latest,
rays from the tops of the mountains
and the throbbing of the electric
plant ceases for the uight, nothing
any more interrupts the silence of
the outer world. There is no aggravating
orchestra of "Mongrel,puppy,
whelp and hound and curs of low degree;"
uo beart-rendiag, hair-raising
caterwaul startling the midnight air;
no nightly raid and drill of rats;
these three nuisances of the ordinary
civilization have not come in any
force yet Morpheas jast comes
down, waves his magic wand, and
"tired nature's sweet restorer, balmy
sleep" begins to "knit the unravelled
sleeve of care," nor wases till
the long-risen son lifts his chin ovei
the ridge of brushy mountain. It
is a place of rest.

reproacn me later for having said
nothing of the frequent rains, I will c
remind you that this is not peculiar 11
to Montreat, bat is characteristic of ^
the whole monntain section. But '
the manner of the Montreat rain is 1
somewhat of a peculiarity. The rain a
comes straight down, rarely accom- a
pinied With wind and so will not b
cross the window sill. It speedily r
runs away and leaves the gravelly F
surface of the roads and paths solid H
and passable. A9 wind-storms are &
rure, so with electric storms. On
rare occasions you may hear the dis- *
tant rumble of thunder, but what
vou call the thuuder-clap is hardly J
?/ ? - ?ever
heard. If you are "afraid of sj
thunder" or wind, come to Montreat u
and enjoy a reprieve from your jj
fears. Nature?little harried as yet l
"by art and man's device"?rules al
here; and nature in her ordinary
mood 13 gentle; and nature and God
are near each other aud one is apt to
catch the spirit of the p'ace, who *
tarries here long. I have enjoyed
nothing here more than the singing
of Rev Mr Wright, the Choctaw
Indian preacher. The Indians, you t)
know, are of a poetic turn, because, {J
of all other people, they are the C
children of nature. To see his face \
radiant and wreathed in smiles as a
with charming voice he sung the a
