A tribute to the memory of
William Henry McElveen, mem
ber and ruling elder of Bethel
Presbyterian church, and for
many years the efficieht stated
clerk of sessions of this church.
William Henry McElveen was
born in Sumter, now Clarendon
+ Smith Carolina, on
tvu UIJ , V i. ^ VM?? ,
the 32th of March 1831, and departed
this life, at the home of
his daughter, Mrs E F Epps,
near Mouzon, on the 13th of December,
1906, at the age of 75
years. On the -6th of August,
1855, he made a profession of
his faith in his Savior, Jesus
Christ, and was received as a
communicant into the Midway
church.
On the 23 of November, 1856,
he was elected ruling eider and
on the 4th of January, 1857, he
was ordained and installed into
that office in Midway church.
Bethel church was organized
on the 8th of August, 1874, at
which time he was " elected
and installed an elder of this
church, and continued such until
his Master called him to the
church triumphant in heaven.
He was for many years, and
until his death, the stated clerk
of session. He was very accu
rate and correct in keeping
these records. He was faithful
in discharging his duty as a
ruling elder, and was an upright
and consistent servant ot
the Lord* He is and will be
greatly missed in this community,
but he has left an influence
for good which will be felt foT
long years to come. He is survived
by five loving sons and
two affectionate and devoted
daughters, who are joined by a
large number of relatives and
friends, in mourning the loss we
have all sustained by his removal
from us. His funeral services
were held in this church on the
14th of December,?the very
same day and hour of the funeral
in Sumter of his pastor's wife.
These services were conducted,
in the necessary absence of the
faslor, by Revs E C Baily, E E
Brvin andSPBethea. His re*
mains were then laid to rest in
the family burial ground, near
the beloved wife who some
years before had preceded him
there to await a glorious resurrection.
Be it therefore resolved by the
session of Bethel church: That
this tribute to the memory of
our deceased brother be recorded
in our book of Sessionar*Records?and
be read by our pastor
to our congregation from
our pulpit.
