SUNDArS THUNDER STOKE
Retro Hoese Struck by UghtBlog and
Two Boys Killed
Last Sunday afternoon a
thunder storm of unusual severity
came up and amid the downpour
of rain the lurid lightning's
lash, punctuated by the crash of
thunder, showed nature in her
3ubliine passion. The rain tell
io torrents and as the canal
across the railroad is not cleaned
out, the inundation, increased
by daily showers, has caused
quite a number of pools, ponds
and lakes to be formed in various
parts ot the town. Several
trees were struck, we learn, but
no serious damage was done in
the immediate vicinity of Kingtree.
The thunder storm had quite
an extended area and we hear
that its effects were most disasterous.
The most serious case
is that of Peter Pendergrass, a
colored man who lives about
four miles east of Kingstree.
When the storm came up Peter's
two boys, Henry and Wil
Liam, aged respectively nine
?nd four yeare, were in front of
the fire-place, the dwelling being
a four-room frame bailding
with a clay chimney, when the
chimney was struck. One child,
Henry, the elder,was killed outright,
while the younger, William
was so badly shocked that
be died the i^ext day. The other
members of the-family were
in the room some distance from
the chimney, and Jseveral of
them were severely shocked,
rhe boy Henry was instantly
killed and his brother, William,
iied one day later, the funerals
if the two brothers being but
ine day apart.
Daigbters of the Confederacy.

Leo, August 20:?The protracted
meeting held at Prospect
was a grand success. We
hope much and lasting good has
been accomplished. ' ' *

negaraiess or tae rain on
Thursday we saw several young
folks on our streets. Bain does
not seem to count.
Miss Nina Porter of Jay has
been spending a few days with
Miss Lena Duke of Leo, We
hope this visit will soon be repeated.
Quite a number of our young
folks attended services at Liberty
Baptist church Friday evening.
Miss Feasy Cox of Venters,
who is now at Leo will return to
her home in a few days.
Mrs Maggie Duke has returned
to her home in Charleston,
after a visit here.
We are informed that a cer- \
tain young man in our community
has engaged a house for
another year. We realize the
common sense in a provision of
this kind, but can it be the man
intends living alone? We think
not, from the way he was driving
down towards Prospect
Monday morning.
Mr Wallace Brown, who paid i
a flying visit to Lake Oitf Tuesday,
returned safe and sound
on Wednesday.
On Tuesday Mrs Galloway,
Mrs R ? Duke, Miss Lena Duke,
Miss Feasy Cox, Mr Sarlie
Duke and Messrs Leroy and
Jack Galloway were the guests
of Mrs Arthur Brown. Mr and
Mrs J D Duke were also there in
the evening.
