Death of Mr J J HcCalloaab?Personal and Local Items Salters Depot, August 12:? Mr J J McCullough, of the Trio seetion, died at his houie early Sunday moruing. He was bora in 1846 and was therefore iu the 61st year of his age. He was buried ou Monday at Uuiou Presbyterian church, of which from his youth up he had been a consistent member. He leaves a wife and nine children? five boys aud four girls. He was followed to the grave by a host of relatives and friends The funeral service was conducted by Rev J E Mahaffey of Kingstree. Mr J M Cook ia spending some time at Tate Springs, Tenn. Mr aDd MrsJ A Ferrell, also Mrs J H L Chandler, are spending a few weeks in Asheville, N C. Mrs Loula Carraway of Lakeland, Fla., is spending some time here with her father and sisters. Mr D C Bryan, oar popular R F 0 carrier, spent a few days last week at the exposition. Rev J 0 Caraway and his brother, Mr Edward Caraway, also took in the Jamestown exposition recently. Mr Theo Grnber of Charleston is visiting relatives here. Mr C W Boswell spent Sunday at Ridgeville, S C. Mr L T Thompson left here Monday for a visit to his home in Leland, 111. Mrs J C Everett is visiting friends in Marlboro. Miss Nellie Fowler of Bennettsville is visiting her father, Rev J J Tart. The celebrated Kingstree minstrels will be here one night next week and give a performance in the town hall. The yonng folks enjoyed a delightful dance iu the town ball one night last week. Mr J G Tiner's little boy met with a serious accident last week. Ir. helping to pat on a wagon rack it struck him on the head, splitting the scalp for three or fonr inches. The little fellow is getting on nicely Satlers Depot. Dkllwood, August 10:?The Indiantowu school, which has been progressing very successfully uuder the skillful management of Mrs LE Suowden, closed on the 9th inst Before the time for the exercises to begiu parents and lriends of the pupils began to gather at the school house The exercises were opened with a song by the pupils and prayer led by Rev T E James. After this a very interesting programme was rendered, consisting of recitations and dialogues. The children showed that they had worked hard on their selections and delivered them well. After the exercises by the pupils were Dimmed interesting talks were made by Re? T E James and Mr 8 J Wall. Mr James emphasized the fact that children should receive* religious training in connection with their literary work. He showed . i rhat impressions could be made np- \ ' on the children while at school. Mr S J Wall, from the University of Sonth Carolina, made a forceful plea for high schools in rural communities. He first showed the* need aud value of a high school ?. training, then the conditions, that exist throughout the State, and how easily a high school could be ea~ tablished in a rural community; also what an advantage it wonld be to the farmers to educate their son* and daughters. , , After the speeches a most sumptuous table was spread to which every one was welcomed. The afternoon was pleaaurably spent by both old and young. The people of the community are generally interested in education and , are putting forth every effort possible to secure bitter educational advantages ill their community. G.
