j TRYING TINE FOR BAMBERG WOMEN- j
__
: Terrible Experience of Four Ladies
Wilta Stranger.
Bamberg, July 6:?The citiJ
zens of Bamberg- were greatly j
j aroused at an early hour last
I night when it was reported that
four white ladies had been held (
up only a few hundred yards beyond
the city limits.
Their experience was detailed
by them about as follows:
"Shortly after we left the j
house, walking down the di.*ec- i
tion of Hunter's chapel, we discovered
a man, a white man,
walking in the woods. He came
? i - e ? a.
into toe roaa, passed a iew sieps
iu front of us and pulling out
his pistol, pointed it at us and
told us that if we made any outcry
he would kill us. We were
all paralyzed with fear. There
was a wide ditch by the side of
the road, almost full of water.
He ordered us to wade through
it and go out into the woods.
We did not go into the water,
but finding a comparatively narrow
span in the ditch, three of
us managed to get across, and
he assisted the fourth in cross- :
ing.
"He kept his pistol pointed
- *1 i* . A! 1
towaias us an ine ume as uc
marched us through the woods,
across a barbed wire fence and
into a pond, where we sunk in
mud and water almost to our
shoe tops. Here he ordered us
to sit down in the mud and water,
but no one obeyed. The (
youngest in the crowd began to
cry, and about the same time a
waonfl rnnld he seen in the dis- 1
tance coming along the road.
The man then laughed demoniacally
and said: T just wanted
to show you what I could do
with you,'and rag off through
the wood.
"He did not touch one of us
except the one be helped across
the ditch, but he bad us completely
at his mercy and we
were afraid to refuse to obey his
orders."
The general impression seeins
to be that it was the act of a
crazy man, but if so, it is passing
strange that he has not yet
been found.
One of the ladies held up is
married and is here from another
part of the State on a visit,
while the other three are single
and reside in this community.
They are all members of our
best families and it is at their
earnest request that their names
are not given.?News & Courier,
