%' * . BUDGET OF NEWS ! KFPORTFD FROM FLORENCE. EVENTS Of INTEREST OF RECENT DATE THAT HAVE TRANSPIRED HI THE LITTLE GATE CITV. i Kl'?kkxce, June 24-The weather now resembles "the g*ood *li summer time." and many people are seeking* the mounm tains and other resorts where * the cltmate is more endurable. ?- 1 ~ I Several Morerumes nave already gone. Among them are Dr ana Mrs James Evans, Mr and Mrs W R Barringer, Mr and Mrs John Kuker and Miss Louise Hoffmeyer, who left some days ago for Europe, via New York. The party will be gone practically all summer and will take in f ^ some of the most interesting places of the Old World. Hamburg, Germany, is Mr. Kuker's j old home, and he puts aside his L business interests here and vis' its that place once a year. The military company "here, weich is in charge of Lieuten ant H M Ayer and Capt R Lee Brunson, is making arrangements for an encampment trip on the Island, where the}' i mi will go m a lew a ays. iue wmpany gave several tine drills re cently and the boys will be in fine shape for the trip. I^ast summer the boys went to Chick amauga, Tenn., and many of the boys went up on Lookout mountain and viewed with much interest that historic old place. Court convened here last Monday, but no cases of any importance were tried and it was a very short term indeed. There were several very interesting criminal cases, but owing to the illness of Solicitor John S Wilson, they were continued until next term. Our hopes are growing stronger as to the new passenger station at this place. The contractors have finished their plans and they have been shown to the citizens of the city, who are very much pleased with them. We cannot say positive ly, but we believe the building i ? will be started in the next two! months. Sam C Wilson, a negro watchman employed in the freight yards here, was instantly killed Friday night by being struck by an engine. His body was horribly mangled. Wilson stepped down off one engine and was struck by another, which was moving in an opposite direction. fey^j|?illiam Rutherford, another railroad hand, was found 2i*aous in a shanty car Visitioc brettfgrht with his head Castle if with an ax. The wounded man was taken to the r ACL hospital, where the phy' sicians gave him every attention Although is still living, be is unable to give any iuformation as to who committed the deed. Witnesses say that Rutherford was seen the day before with about forty dollars on his person, and it is thought that he was knocked down and robbed. Some tobacco was sold on this market a few days ago and brought a very fancy price for ha firct rnrincr From all re ptfrts the tobacco crop will be pretty sorry in some portions of Florence county, as the result of the hail which fell some weeks ago. Some fields of the the weed are said to have been completely wiped out, though the farmers had pretty much ail of it insured, therefore there will not be such a heavy loss on them. Mr W D McClam, a former Williamsburg boy, has cast his lot in Florence and is pushing h the insurance business. Jf Mr Seth Phelps, Jr., formerly ^ of Williamsburg but now of ? Charleston, spent Sunday in the city with friends and relatives. Conductor J C Cleningham's residence on" Cheeves street, caught fire to-day and came very near being totally destroy- J t ed, though the tire department responded promptly aud extinguished the flames before the building was entirely burned down. It wa.> owing to the long distance of the building from the engine house that the tire got such headway. I hear that the Woodmen in that section somewhere are planning to give a big picnic on July 4. Mr Editor, you must get the boys to tell when and where the)* are going to have it and this old scribe will try go and carry a basket. W M S ITEMS FROM BENSON. Crops are PranislBe-PersoBal NotesTfcat Dispensary Electlu. Benson, June 24:?The past ten days of fair weather has enabled our farmers to get their crops in pretty good shape and their prospects op to this writing are promising. Mr J G Nesraith, who has been visiting his sick father, Mr Robert Nesmith, near here returned to his home at Newton, Ga., last Saturday. He took back with hitn his motherin-law, Mrs M L McConnell, wno has been staying with her son-in-law and Hanahtpi. Mr and Mrs F M Nesmith. Mrs McContiell will be very much missed in our church and community. She and all of her children, (except Mrs F M Nesmith) are now residents of Georgia. Mr A H Nesmith, who is in busi11 ess at Ducker, Ga., came to see his father and mother, Mr aud Mrs F M Nesmith, very unexpec.edly this day two weeks ago. He came in answer to the telegram sent to Mr J G Nesmith, the telegraph uperatars having changed the initals on the route to "A H'' instead of "J. G." Mrs S M Nesmith of Rhtms is spending some time with the family of her step-son, Mr F M Nesmith. Her son, Mr L W Nesmith, who is express agent on the A. C. Line running between Charleston aud Florence, came down and spent the day with her and Mr Nesmith'a family yesterday. Our friend, Mr P S Courtney of Kingstree, also visited relatives at Benson yesterday and called in pleasantly to see us. Messrs D D and F Rhem of Rbem'8 called in and took a peep at their Benson busiuess this morning for the first time in fourteen months. They were on their way to Kingstree. We are pleased to report the condition of our good friend Mr W E Snowden somewhat improved, and we hope and believe that with the careful attention he is getting, he will soon be restored to health. We are sorrry to announce the illness of Mrs H C Haddock, who has been sick for several weeks. We hope she will soon be convalescent. Well, Mr Editor, our clerk of the board of Supervisors of registration, is ver much surprised at the piece in The Record of last week taken from the "News and Courier" concerning the number of qualified voters in our county, and further says he would like to know where the News and Courier's corresponidant get his information from. He positively states that there are not ? i:/?. j i. :^ tnat many quanneu vuiers iu uur county and that they cannot establish that fact by that registration books. He further states that their information to our county Supervisor was that fully one-fourth of the qualified voters was represented in these petitious. So it now looks like Gov Ansel and Attorney Gen Lyon will have a say-so in the matter. We hope all who attend our Children's day services next Sunday will remember to bring along their offerings, which is an important item on the progiamme in which ill can participate. So, kind friends, remember this when you come next Sunday to Benson. A cleansing, clean, cooling, soothing, healing household remedy is DeWitt's Carbolized Witch Hazel Salve.
