SOME MORE IMPRESSIONS
OF OUR LOW COUNTRY.
1 HISS GRACE HEMPHILL WRITES ANOTHER
INTERESTING LETTER TELLING
HER DELIGHTFIL MEMORIES.
Perhaps it will he pleasant h-. r^after
to remember these things," is
i liberal translation of a sentiment
of Horace. It is indeed so with me
when I think of wha* happened dtir
ing my pleasant st<y of eight
montns in the low country. Every
thing differs fioin what we have i:i
the np country. It was a new life
ami a new world to me and will alwavs
he a bright memory for me.
At home I live within a hundred
ami tffrv varils of a railroad with
- 7 j
six trains passing a Jay, but at Venters
I was twenty-three miles distant
from a railroad station. I was
indeed -'out of sight."
It will not always be so. for aj
railroad is projected and in time!
will run through the community in
which I lived. It will run within !
a quarter of a mile from where I'
was domiciled, going from Florence
to (ieorgetowu, and opening np a
splendid country. It will make many
changes. The people now live
at home, raising their own supplies,
but when ibe railroad comes they
will be paying out their money for
even the necessaries of life which
they can produce at low cost.
Cotton is raised there and tobacco
in about equal proportion. If
one crop fails, the other succeeds
and the farmers "never mind the
weather si the wind doa't blow."
Last ysar a great storm like a cyclone
swept over the country and
laid low all that was in the fields.
Immense trees were torn up by the
roots and the devastation was gener
jal. Toe farmers (lid not lose hope
entirely ani with a good cr>p this
vear they will recover.
There is nothing more attractive
than a large tobacco field. Planted
at regular intervals with great green
leaves it is a picture of regularity
and comes up to my idea of a field
of "living green." The crop depends
upon get'ing good seasons
an.l steady mTCvk, but it j'^y?.
Grain and food diops can be rais
ed and the soil is adapted to truck
ing. At Lake City, when I was
there, strawberries were selling tw<
boxes for five cents and people wer<
getting rich at the business. A
Abbeville I have seen two bojeet
sell for fifty cents,
j In the community where I wa
the people are very much interested
in educating their childien and will
ing to sumd all the money required.
They are great people tj attend
church The Methodists and Baptists
predominate. The preaching
is very good and the ministers ar*
liberally supported. There were
some of the Holiness persuasion in
the community but I was the only
Seceder ever seen in that section.
I had my Psalm book with me ant
I the people at my boarding house
became fond of the twenty-third
Psalm sung with the chorus, "He
Leadeth vMe.''
Theyonng men all have nice buggiesand
splendid horses. There is
nothing more pleasant than to accompany
one of these young gentJel'
men on a drive. The roads are lev|
el as a door and there are no rocks at
i all. When you are comfortably
eated the young man draws the
! reins, the high stepper with head
rect springs to his work and throws
the miles behind him in line fashion.
He doesn't stop for the bridges even
?he jumps them.
Once I was passing through a
swamp at twilight, in tne west tne
sun bad gone down and darkness
was coming on. The crepuscular
birds and insects were moving
around. Wierd sounds were heard
on all sides and every now and then
a wave of hot air struck my cheeks
and I felt as if I was passing through
the region ef uncanny spirits and
hauute but emerging from these lugubrious
surroundings to the brighter
light my fears departed, my agitation
ceased aud I enjoyed to the
fullest extent the remainder of the
journey.
Nothing looks so home-like and
has such an appearance of comfort
in the quiet evening as the blazing
fires seen through the open doors of
^ . *
! rile houses il'niiT tli*" way. ' It is the
j land of {lines and these fires are easily
kept tip at an infinitesnial cost.
The j'iii- has many usee; the chief
n*e is the manufacture of ttirpenti:

for many yen's the distinguished
senator from Williamsburg counm
has a method ?>f extracting the essential

H:s manufacturing plant < ost some
ten thousand dollars.
It is said that a young couple
carried on a courtship with pine. The
young man sent his sweetheart a
piece of pine, meaning, "I pine for
yon,'' 'Shecaught on and returned
him a pine knot meaning, "pine not."
An elderly friend of mine when he
heard the story remarked, "great
Dow-ell!"
Sam Waller's father told Sarii to
| "beware of the widdera." I never
i appreciated the full force of this aii
v:ce until I met the "bewitching bereaved
one" who is in business at
Lake City. I observed her many
admirers and was puzzled to know
J how she held them in such thrallom.
i I knew the fact but could not ttll
the reason. If I could I''Woodberry"
my old plans.
Later on I may have more to say
of my life at Venters but for the
present I will no longer abuse thepatience
of the reader.
