Haviug failed signally in its attempt to show up South Carolina to a disadvantage in comf " t ^ j art so n with Counectic.it, or to refute a single point of our argument against compulsory education, the Columbia State attempts to cover its retrograde movement by a volley of cheap sarcasm aud coarse abuse. In fact, : The State appears to be very much disgruntled and in its choleric state is scarcely responsible for its utterances. For instance, in one paragraph it compares us to the Colossos (Colossus?) of Rhodes, while in another it de1 clares us too small to be worthy of its distinguished notice. , Following the Colossus meta- , phor occurs this bright get-off: , "How delightful it must be to i ~ ' * have really gigantic statue."' ( Now, we would like for The State | to explaiu its meaning?what or whose status it refers to; or in its tine frenzy did it drop its "r" as well as its mautiers? I No, dear contemporary, we are I h ' t>y no manner of means hanker- ? ing after "publicity'' of the 1 State's brand, nor in fact anyiJiinr fhftf 'I he State has nower! to bestow. For some time it has J been our inteution to ' discuss , through these columns the subject ( of compulsory educatiou aud to endeavor to point out its fallacies, ] and The State simply gave us 1 an opportunity to set the ball * lolling. In case we were in error us to any assertion, statistics or argument adduced we honestly desired to be set straight, but up ^ to this time- nothing we said has ] * been controverted. j Now, in our explanation of the I origin of the movement for com- 1 pulsorv education, we made no claim to "discovery,"' but cited as our authority The Manufacturers' 1 * Record, of Baltimore. But The State savs that the movemeut J grew out of the fact that in 1S98, during the Spanish-American war, it was observed that white enlist-1: ed men had to make their marks;' on pay day. Now, reading between the lines, I we infer that Tne State ta?es credit unto itself for originating the; glorious propaganda of compul-! sion in South Carolina. Well,;' we arc quite willing for it to i ! 1 lay that flattering motion to its < soul atul appropriate any honor it can extract from the further- j ance of its pet measure. , i Its version, however, differs I \ widely from that of the Matiu- i facturers' Record, which for ma- j ny years has made a special study jj of conditions in the South. As'( to whicti is the better authority one ia piivileged to take his choice. The Question of Bonds. In another column will be seen | the notice of the trustees of Kingstree school district that an election i will be held here next Tuesday (June 23) on the question of issuing bonds iii the sum of $10,000 to enlarge the school building. While ( we lure little doubt that the vote j will be atirmative, yet we would I urge upon the citizens of the town ( < not to take this for granted, but to < come out and vote. Tiien, again, if ! r if a large vote be cast aud the bond ' issue be decided on by a big major-1 ^ ity, it will iiieau a saving ef several < hundied dollars in the way of inter- ' est in placing the bonds. * As we understand it, the proposed * bond issue will cover a period of ' twenty years, and all the town will > have to pay is the interest and a small sum annually to create a < linking fund for retiring the bonds J at maturity. It is therefore obvious | that the lower the rate of interest in placing the bonds, the lighter will t be the burden upon the town. \ As to the necessity of this additional building, no one acquainted with the conditions can deny that more room is needed. It is the best evidence possible of the school's prosperity, and we hope that in a few years accommodation will be needed for five hundred pupils. ===== j It is one of the severest tests ( i of friendship to tell your frifend j of his faults. If you are angry * with a man, or hate him, it is ? not hard to go to him and stab ( with words; but to so love a man ^ that you cannot bear to see the stain of sin upon him, and to ( speak harmful truth through lov- i ing words?that is friendship, j But few have such friends. Our * ?nemies teach us what we are at S the point of the 'sword. > ?
