Leo, S C,May 15:?Editor County Record:?After a long silence I am constrained to cry out, when I hear of farmers obligating their cotton for delivery next fall at 10 cents per lb. in the face of the fact that that prospects for anything like a fnll crop are the poorest in years; and, on the other haud, there never Ws Wn a time when the world needed and was willing to pay more for cotton than now, There has been a time when we thought that 10 cents was a fancy price for cotton, but you must remember that the cost of living then was not half what it is to-day. Labor was not more than half what it is to-day. Then you could boy a good mule or horse tor $75.00; wagons, buggies, etc., correspondingly cheap; flour, $3.25; sugar, 3 l-2c; coffee, 8 l-2c bacon, from 3 to 5c; plow lines, ]0c a pair, and many other thingii I might mention. You know how they stand today. Well, a fairly good mule or horse, $200.00; wagons and buggies, about $20.00 to $25*00 higher; bacon, 10 to 12c; flour, $5.00 to$6.00abbl; coffee, 10 to 15c; sugar, 6 to 7c; plow lines 25c a pair, and dry goods, shoes, hats, etc., much higher. Why then sheuld we think 10c a fair price for cotton? I say there is no profit for the farmer when he sells bis cotton for 10c now. And, on the other hand, I can see no good reason why the present growing crop should not sell for 12c. I verily beleive it will reach that figure. Brother Farmer, come let us reason together. Can you ever hope to set the price on your cotton when you tie your bauds by signing contracts? Think over these things aud see if you are not making a great mistake. The cotton Association has done much to help the farmers in getting a fair price for their cotton. No fairminded man will dispute it; but when the farmer goes and sells on contract for less than his cotton is worth he is not only standing in his own light, but is a stumbling blockin the way of others who are trying honestly to get the value of their products according to demand and supply. But I have said enough, 1 hope .,v. ;v at Once i hurry about ing Clothes. United we stand; divided we fall. Now, Mr Editor, I been in and around Kmgstree several times lately, not thinking I was in any danger whatever, but was surprised to learn that there was another Wolfe in those regions. With best wishes for Mr Editor and all the readers of The Record, I am very truly, J Davis Carter. Mar V.Q07. HOW WE WALK. The Muscles Used and the Mtehanlaal Work They Do. The chief muscles concerned in walking are those in the calf and back of the leg, which, b}' pulling up the heel, also pull up the bones of the foot connected with it, and then the whole body, the weight of which is passed on throtgh the bones of the leg. When walking the trunk is thrown forward so that it would fall down prostrate were not the right foot planted in time to support it. The calf muscles are .1 j 11 A: t.. ii neipea in mis acuon oy mose on the front of the trunk and legs, which contract and pull the body forward, and, the trunk slanting forward when the heel ip raised by the calf muscles, the whole body will be raised and pushed forward and UDward. This advancement of each leg is effected partly by muscular action, the muscles used being (1) those on the front of the thigh, bending it forward on the pelvis; (2) the hamstring muscles, which slightly bend the leg on the thigh; (3) the muscles on the front of the leg, which raise the front of the foot and toes, preventing the latter, in swinging forward, ft-om hitching in the ground. Wh?.n one foot Kas reached the ground the action of the other has not ceased. There is another point in walking. The body is constantly supported and balanced on each leg alternately and therefore on only one at once; hence there must be ? ? ?? ?' ?? - iknAimn/v t V? A SUlite mean* iui uiiuwiu^ tuc vcuter of gravity over the line of support formed bv the bones of each leg, as it supportg the weight of the body. This is done in various ways, and hence the difference in the walk of different people. There may be slight rotation at the hip joint, bringing the center of gravity of the body over the foot of this side. This "rocking" motion of the trunk and thigh is accompanied by a movement of the whole trunk and leg over the foot planted on the ground and is ,accompanied by a compensating outward movement at the nip. The body rises and swing's alternately from one side to the other as its center of gravity comes alternately over one or. the other leg, and the curvature of the spinal bones is altered with the varying position of the weight. ? London Hrvcnitfll A Man of Few Word*. As everv one knows, the great Yon Moltke never wasted words and despised anything that aj>proached garrulity in others. German army officers are fond of telling an anecdote illustrative of this peculiarity: Von Moltke was leaving Berlin on a railway journey. Just before the train pulled out of the station a captain of hussars entered the general's compartment and, recognizing him, saluted with "Guten morgen, excellenz!" Two hours later the train slowed up at a way station. The captain rose, saluted and with another "Guten morgen, excellenz!" left the train. Turning to one of his companions, Yon Moltke said, with an expression of the greatest disgust, "Intolerable gas hag!" ? Harper's Weekly. f ' V 1 J See Our Correct Clothes j| *0 !
