GOOD FOR INDIANA!
John D.et. Al. in a Fair Hay t; Disgorge
in-Gotten Gains.
Chicago, 1^., April 13:?The
Standard Oil company of Indiana,
which has been on trial
for six weeks before Jud^e K M
Landis of the United States district
court, tonight was found
guilty on 1,463 counts of re- j
ceiving rebates from the Chicago
and Alton railroad of ship-!
ments oi oil from Whiting, Ind.,j
to East St. Louis, III. There j
were originally 1,903 counts in
the indictment, 440 counts fail-'
ing on errors.
If the v^-dict is sustained,
the oil company is liable to a
maximum tine ot $29,260,000, as
the Elkins law, which the indictment
charged the company
violated, provides a line of $1,000
to $20,000 for each offence.
Pending motion for new trial,
which John "S Miller, chief counsel
for the defence, announced
would be made immediately, no
penalty will be fixed by the
court, Each count related to a
carload shipment.
Delnas' Speeck
The New York Sun says of the
speech of Del mas, the California
lawyer, in his summing up
for Thaw: "He juggled with
metaphor, he played with simile,
he apostrophised, and he hurled
the hyperbole. He summoned
an army of adjectives to his aid,
and of adverbs be was unafraid."
Whether words used
with skill have lost their power
wild probably be known before
this reaches the reader. The
Sun calls it a style of oratory
ma>de popular a good many years
ago in the shadow of Bunker
Hill and which has been traveling
Westward with the course of
empire.

annually than is given by the
State.
Prof. P P Bethea made it very
plain to the meeting that the
present school building is inadquate
for the proper instruction
of the large enrollment of
pupils, giving the following figures
as illustrative:
The session of 1903-04 showed
an enrollment of 151.
Session of 1904-05, enrollment
208.
Session of 19Q5-06, enrollment
22G. '
Session of 1906-07, enrollment
253.
Prof. Bethea stated that seven
children had been refused admittance
this session on account
of the overcrowded class-rooms,
and told of many inconveniences,
caused bj lack of sufficient room
and teaching force. From
forty-three to forty-five pupils
had to be taught in several
class-rooms and one had as many
as sixty-five.
After a general discussion of
the subject, Rev. J E Mabaffey
moved that the trustees of :
school district No. 16 be requested
to order an election* in
the said district for the purpose
