Grand Jury Presentment.
STATE OF SOUTH CAROLINA,
County of Williamsburg.
To His Honor J C Klugh, Presiding
Judge:
We, the Grand Jury, beg tc
submit herewith our presentment:
We have given carelul atten
tion to all bills handed us by
the Solicitor and have reported
same to the court.
We have visited the jail and
find it in good condition and the
prisoners comfortable. We
note, however, that the kitcher
of the jail needs some repairs
and recommend that such repairs
as are necessary be put ir
at once.
Our attention has been called
to the condition of the public
road that leads from Kingstree
to Manning. In Black rivei
swamp this road is impassable
and has been so for some time
and we recommend that tlye
road receive the immediate att<*ntinn

Our attention has also beer
colled to the condition of Blacl
Mingo bridge. This bridge is
said to be dangerous and we
recommend that the iron bridge
authorized by the legislature be
put in at once.
We have not been able at this
time to make as examination oj
the county offices, but have
appointed a committee to make
a recess examination and make
report to the next court.
We desire to thank yoni
Honor for able arid lucid inter

Id Honor of His Honor.
On Tuesday night a tish-frj
was gotten up by the members
of the Kingstree bar and the
court officials in honor of Judge
Klugh. The party left towr
early in the evening and drove
to the Red Hill landing, where
shad were plentiful and being
fitly prepared, were enjoyed by
every member of the party. The
Judge, who is an "up-countryman,"
seldom has an opportunity
to get such fine fish so soon
after their leaving the water,
and expressed himself very
freely as the superiority of our
Red Hill piscatorial product
over the cat-fish stew of the red
hills of upper Carolina.
?
A good deal of interest was
manifested here in The Colum
bia State's prize voting contest,
as several of the candidates had
friends who were working1 for
them. Miss W M Riser of Newberry,
who won the capital
prize, a $1,350 automobile, is a
sister of Mrs LeRoy Lee of
Kingstree. Miss Evelyn Cunningham
of Kingstree won the
first prize in District 11, a trip
to the Jamestown exposition.
Miss Massie Lee Estes, formerly
of Kingstree and now of Man
ning, won the second prize in
District 11, a gold watch. We
congratulate a'.l these young
ladies on their good fortune.

THom Haunting Notaa.
There was a peculiar sound from
the direction of the woods as the
member of the Bird Lovers' society
sat in the window of her friend's
country home one summer afternoon.
She quickly took her small "Bird
Suide" from her ever present bag
and rapidly turned the leaves. At
last she paused with a smile of satisfaction
and listened, with her fin

book, till the sound came again.
When it was repeated an expression
of doubt flitted across her features,
but still she was hopeful. t
"You probably know many of the
bird notes, living so near the woods
and in 6uch a quiet spot," she said
to her friend. "Can you tell me
what bird that is?"
"That," said her friend briefly,
"is our goat. We shall have to move
him farther off." ? Youth's Companion.
A Well Dressed Ham.
Lord Russell when practicing at
the bar one day examined a witness
whose evidence promised to be damaging
unless he could be previously
confused. The only vulnerable part
of the man was said to be his self
esteem. The witness, a portly, overdressed
individual, went into the
box, and the great lawyer took him
in hand.
"Mr. John Tomkins, 1 believe?"
"Yes."
"You are a stockbroker?"
"T ho ?
Lord Russell regarded him attentively
for a few moments and then
said, "And a very well dressed ham
you are, sir."
The shout of laughter which followed
completely disconcerted Mr.
Tomkins, and the lawyer's point
was gained.?Scottish Nights.
An American, Most Likely.
The "seeing London" automobile
rolled out Piccadilly in the direction
of Hyde park.
"That, ladies and gents," shouted
the guide as they passed an ancient
edifice surrounded by a high
brick wall?"that is the town house
of the Duke of Dea, one of our largest
landed proprietors."
The eyes of the beautiful American
on the back seat were illumined
with sudden interest.
"Who landed him?" she cried.? i
