jh * % fh \ LOCAL NEWS REPORTED RON LAKE CITY. . r k WIDE-AWAKE MAGISTRATE?INTE8^ ^ EST IN EDUCATIONAL AFFAIRS? PERSONAL MENTO Mrs Nichols of Danville, Va., is risking at Mr 0 T Hall's. Magistrate Mack Collins of Florence was in town Friday last. The governor has appointed Mr E F Prosser, Venters, a notary public. LeRoy Lee, Esq., spent a portion of Thursday here on professional affairs. A C Hinds, Esq., was in town from Kings tree Tuesday on T>i-rvfoccir?nal hnsinKS. Mr H P Baldwin is in Charles ton in attendance upon the United States court as a grand juror. Some of our people are making their arrangements preparatory to visiting the Jamestown exposition. Mr and Mrs G L Sauls have returned home from an extended trip up North, where they visited several cities. v Mr J A Green is having his liner r?n Thomas street re modeled throughout and will move back there as soon as the work is completed. In the meantime he is occupying the "Hall" house. Magistrates James Bryan at Trio and Hugh Pipkin at Bloomingvale have sent in their resignations already. They evidently did not find the office a "soft snap \ else hardly would they have laid aside the robe of office after having worn it only some thirty days. Magistrate Gaskins keeps his court open every day and the grind goes on pretty steadily. He has-been in office only one month, yet in that time he has handled some twenty-five or / thirty warrants, and woe betide the wrong-doer who is pronounced guilty in his court. The people around Pergamos are arousing themselves in the ' * * ? mi u ^ matter 01 eaucanon. xucyuavc called in a surveyor, laid off a campact and symmetrical school district, containing- twelve square miles with Pergamos in almost the exact geographical ^ center, and are now petitioning ^^^te-cqunty board of education to establish this as a special district and^to order an election for the purpose of levying a ta"x of four mills in addition to the present tax. This is the way to go at such things. Mr R B Fitch is one of the leaders in the movement and he has gone into it just as he goes into making cotton and sugar-cane," etc., and he will succeed. The next step will be a good modern school house and these people will have that, too. Increased interest in education is one ot the most encouraging signs of " * fir r t> tue times. *? u o Scissors Left Id Woman's Body. Wichita, Kan., March 16:? A pair of five-inch surgeon's scissors was taken from the thigh of Mrs. W. R. White of Braman, Okla., at the Wichita hospital today. She was operated on for a tumor four years ago and the scissors were left in the abdominal cavity. The| scissors worked through her; body to the thigh, causing excruciating pain. They were discovered with the aid of the "X-ray. % ^ ? \ Card of Thanks. An attache of the American em( bassy at London tells a stoiy of a butler in the employ of a fine old 1 English family whose long service had inculcated in him a personal , : and proprietary interest in the sons and daughters of the house. Once, on the occasion of a large dinner ' party, the conscientious butler ob: served that one of the members of the family, a young girl who had but recently enteral rodety, was devoting an amount of attention to ' her agreeable neighbor on the right obviously in excess of that accorded [ to the less fascinating man on her [ left. This fact perturbed the butler to a degree that could no longer be borne in silence. So under pre, tense of passing the culprit a dish . the butler managed to whisper re> epectfully in her ear: "A little more conversation to ' the left, miss."?Harper's Weekly.
