Godwin of Lake City was noted on our streets Monday. Mr T J Phillips of Central was in town Saturday and favored us with a visit. Maj. S. M. Askins of Lake City, spent Sunday with the family of H. G. Askins, Esq. Mr I A Bradham. of the Greelyville section, called pleasantly to see us this morning. Hon John S Graham of Mor-j risville spent several hours in Kingstree yesterday on business. Messrs. Simon, Brierly, Fen and Walter Poston, from "on the lake", spent the day in town Monday on business. Mr. A. M. Parker, Jr., Lake City's popular cotton buyer, was among1 the visitors here Monday from that live municipality. Mr. W. E. Severance, Lake City's merchandise broker, was! in town Monday making his customary hebdomadal tour of our ^merchants. Mr. T. fi. Allen, the hustling manager of the Mallard Lumber Co. farm near Greelyville, was jn town Tuesday and paid us a pleasant visit. P. H. Stoll, Esq., Consul Commander of Kingstree Camp No. 22, W. O. W. is in Columbia this week as a delegate to the Woodmen convention. Mr E O Taylor of Greelyville attended the K. of P. meeting here last evening, also Mr L D Nettles, now of Alcolu, was present at the meeting. Mr. and Mrs. Louis Sherfesee of Charleston are spending some days at the home of Mrs. Sherfesee's parents, Mr. and Mrs. Thos. M. Gilland. The Graded School will observe "South Carolina Day'' Monday with appropriate exercises, to which all friends of the school are cordially invited. Tuesday evening a party from i i T> ? Mrs. S. Marcus has recently returned from New Yot ' r:id Baltimore where she has purchased her spring- stock, S. r has engaged the services of a lady who has had five years' experience in Baltimore to assist in her millinery department. Owing to the wreck of a freight train at Santee trestle (so it is reported here) train No. 50 from Charleston, due here now at 6:30 p. m., did not arrive until about 4 o'clock this morning. We have not heard the particulars of the wreck. The package of liquor addressed to "Vester Gamble", which, as was stated last week was seized at Lane by Magistrate James Bryan on suspicion and turned over to the Sheriff trending investigation, was re 4 O -? turned to the consignee, there being no direct evidence of its having been ordered for illicit purposes. Mr. J. Willis Cargile, until recently editor-manager of the Manning "Sentinel", has taken charge of the Record's mechanical department. Mr. Cargile comes highly recommended as an all-around newspaper man and we confidently expect the improvement in his department will be conspicuously apparent in the typographical appearance of the paper. A deal in real estate took place last week which means the farther building up of Kingstree. C. Thomas, who is owner of the sales stables in the rear of this piopertv, and we are reliably informed that he will proceed in the near future to erect on these lots a large two-story brick building. This will leave vacant only Dr. Wallace's lot between the corner lots and Dr. McCabe's building now under construction, and we understand that the Doctor will also build within the next few months. Let the good work go on ! On Friday afternoon (tomorrow) in the court bonse, Prof. W. H. Hand, of the faculty of the South Carolina University, will deliver a lecture on education, which everybody who is interested in this great cause is cordially invited to hear. In the morning the same distin guished educator will visit the Graded school and address the pupils on an appropriate subject. The parents of the pupils and friends of the school generally will be welcomed to this pTprrisp. Prof. Hand is an in strutor whose experience covers the whole field of pedagogy and his reputation as a man of scholarly attainments extends throughout the State. THE NEWS IN BRIEF. Paragraphs of Interest Called from Various Sources. Grover Cleveland, the only living ex-president of the United States, is visiting in Georgetown, being the guest of Gen. E. P. Alexander. Alexander Dowie, the founder of Zion City, 111., who proclaimed himself Elijah II., died laft Saturday at his home in the city he had founded. Once blindly followed by 10,000 adherents, he died a heart-broken old man scarcely 200 of his once great following remaining faithful. Mr. E. J. Watson, who is at the head of South Carolina's bureau of immigration, and ExGovernor Heyward called on President Roosevelt Monday with reference to the immigration ,laws. The result of the conference was satisfactory and Mr. Watson and Mr. P. H. Gadsden of Charleston sailed for Bremen Tuesday to arrange for more immigrants. A 75,000 fire occurred in Charleston last week destroying the plant of the Oambahee Fertili zer Co. at the foot of Hasell street and other property in that vicinity. New York's thirteenth snow storm came last Sunday. The little girl, named Mabin, t was playing in front of the f re when the kettle of boiling water was upset and she was burned so severely on the arm that the flesh was stripped from the bones. The child lingered until Monday night when death came to her release. The funeral took place at 4 o'clock p. m.
