* .< J pf y ' i South CaroliBd Day io Public Schools. A programme and collection of material is being prepared at the re- ( quest of the State superintendent of education bv Supt. A. J. Thackston f ' of Orangeburg and some of the teachers of the Orangeburg city schpo's for the celebration of "South j Carolina dav"' m the schools of the * State on Calhoun's birthday, March' h 18. This programme with the ac-' compauying selections will he dis-: tnbuted by the State superintendent's oflice. Superintendent Martin has issued the following letter to the j superintendents and teachers in con-! nection with the matter: 'To Superintendents and Teachers:. "In accordance with an at t of the I general assembly, approved ltih day of February, A. D. 190(5, and herewith incorporated, I am sending you a suggestive programme and material j for the celebration of 'South Caro- j lina day' in the public schools. You will notice that this pamphlet contains material which is not in the i suggestive programme This is done' in order to allow as much variety as possible. Some teachers may desire ( to include in their programmes other ; selectious which are not contained; herein. Of course this will be all right "It is hoped that the celebration of this day will cause the people of | South Carolina to study and appre- \ ciate more generally the history aud | the resources of this great State.! We certainly have not, m the past, ; given due attention to these matters, j If this programme is carried out as the law provides great benefit will iccrue to the people of the State. "Allow me to suggest that, in ad- j ition to carrying out a programme to hich the patrons of the schools may ,-e invited you also provide for the aisiug of sufficient funds ou that occasion to purchase for your school rooms copies of pictures of Calhoun and Hampton. I have arranged with W. A. Reckling & Sons, Columbia, S. C., to furnish to such schools as may desire them, pictures 16 by 20 inches, nic.dy framed, of : these two great men at $2 each. If the children raise money for these pictures and have them put in the school rooms 1 think that such work will, in itself, have a fiue influence. I "Sincerely yours, ?- "0. B. Martin. There may be 1 feverishness in the afternoon, to- i gether with a hacking cough and | sometimes a little spitting of blood, but this is more commonly a sign which appears in the later stages. The two mainstays of the person threatened with or actually suffering from consumption are fresh air and a generous diet. In no disease should the injunction to "throw physic to the dogs" be so faithfully obeyed. If possible, -the consumptive should sleep actually in the open air, on a balcony sheltered from the north and east winds, but if this cannot be done the windows of the bedroom should be kept wide open at night, and the bed should be so placed that it is bathed in the air entering from without. The patients often fear this will give them colds or increase the cough, but it docs just the opposite. Of course the sleeper should be well protected, with a hood in very cold weath- | en and a warm sleeping robe so as not to become chilled if the bedclothes are accidentally displaced. The daytime should be passed in the open air. The patient, if weakness or a fever keeps him from walking, should sit all day on a porch or by an open window on the sunny side of the house and should practice full, deep breathing for a few minutes at a time freouently. The diet should he as nutritious as it is possible to make it. Eggs and milk should he the standby?, with a good allowance of meat and also of fat if fat can be digested. Cure must be taken not to upset the stomach, for much depends upon good digestion, but a patient living in the open air day and night will be astonished at the quantity of food he can eat and assimilate. Fever at any part of the day is a sign to avoid fatiguing exercise. The bowels must be kept in proper condition.?Youth's Companion. The Clever Baby. Nodd? You say your baby doesn't walk yet?
