Columbia, March ll:--That diss Pittman, a pretty young public chool teacher of Marion oouuty, ,a? criminal!y assaulted this afteroon by a negro, who made his es ape after accomplishing his purose, is the information, in brief, rhich reached Columbia to-night. The outrage is said to have centred near Kir by'a Crossroads, not far rom Dillon, in Marion county, rhere Pittman has been teaching he public school. She huddismissd the school for the day aud was in her way houie. The negro was a waiting for her at a lonely spot n the road along which she was oing aud when she came up he atacked her aud accomplished his >urpose, after which he fled, leaving lis victim unconscious. The whole neighborhood is teribly aroused over the event and irmed posses are sa'd to be scouring n every direction for the negro, vhose identity has not yet been esablished. A telephone message ra8 received at Marion asking that doodhounds be sent to the scene of he crime as quickly as possible. Later?Since the foregoing vas put in type a negro, one S'a than McCleary, tias been capured, and while ~ vet identiied by the young tady as her issailant, it is belie- _d that lie s the right par ^he negro s now in the pr ^ntiary at Raleigh, N. Lake City, March 11:?Mr T' ; Rogers of Latta paid Lake City i his regular semi-monthly visit ' iast Sunday. These visits will ; cease during school vacation. Mr II D Moise, an attorney of Sumter, was noted here recently Chicken-pox is in town, consequently some children are not going out much for the present. Mrs Fannie Lee, whose home is at Scranton, is here with her daughter, Mrs \Y E Carter. Mention was made recently of the fact that the Southern Contracting Company, which was building our sewerage system, bad gone into the hands of a receiver. The surety of this XL- ?a:_ 11 ? J: company, uie Aimuut uuuuiu^ Co., having requested it, the commissioners of public works ot our town are arranging to go ahead and complete the work. Mr A H Oimstead, who is a thoroughly competent and reliable engineer, has been placed in charge and the work will be prosecuted with as little delay as possible. Negotiations are pending with the Keinforced Concrete Pipe Company of Jack son, Mich., to manufacture^ the pipes needed to complete the system, and Mr Mertz, the former superintendent of the Southern Contracting Co., may be retained to look after the excavating, laying and connecting of sewers, etc. As has already been stated, the town will not lose a cent by reason of the I si r .1.. i.1 i\n ianure 01 iuc ouumciu , auu if the commissioners have the authority, and this is beinginvestigated right now, to pay the local debts contracted by the company in the prosecution of the work at this place, no one here will be out anything. It is of vital importance that the system be completed and started up to running before warm weather and to that end every effort will be directed and with confidence that the consumation will be reached with time even to spare. Mr W H Covington, better known as "Hamp" Covington, was in the early part ofthe week for the first time in more than ten years. His home is now in Fensacoia, na. We are informed upon good i authority that thirty one gallons of liquor came here Saturday on train No. 51. Where the jugs and cases were to be stored 1 until called for was a problem for tbe agent. This may seem a j 'big thing and may furnish ( material for argument to those j who favor the sale of liquor; . but tbink a minute. Thirty-one gallons at $2.00 per gallon, . which is a high estimate as to price, is $62.00. What is this when compared with $600.00 worth, which the dispensary more than once sold in a day? The officer who makes a single 1 move through personal motives, or in order to injure another 1 whom he would rival, is a scoundrel and sooner or later his rascality will been uncovered, j Thare is talk of an election in our county on the liquor question under the "Carey-Cotfcran" act In fact, there is a movement on ' I ' 1 foot to get up a petition right way, asking for the election. I ceding Date of Issue, If this be signed by one-fourth of the "quatified voters and presented before the tirst of May, the supervisor must order the election.
