KINGSTREE GRADED SCHOOL CELEBRATES THE CENTENARY OF
RHRFRT F I FF'S KIRTHUAY?MISS MARION GILLAND
WINS GOLD MEDAL !
?
On Monday night the Lee Medal Contest was held in the
Graded school auditorium. A great deal of interest was manifested
in this intellectual rivalry and the eight essays read by
the members of the tenth grade were listened to by a large audience.
The essays were sketches of the life and character of
General Robert E Lee, all of them reflecting studious research
and each of them doing credit to its writer. The school entered ]
the auditorium according to grades to a march rendered by Miss ]
Coles, the music teacher During the intermission several selec j
tions were rendered by members of the music classes.
The medal, which is given by the trustees of the school, was
awarded to Miss Marion Gilland. It is a handsome gold medal,
upon which is engraved the bust of General Lee. <
Messrs. P H Stoll, J G McCullough and A C Hinds were the i
judges. j
The medal was presented by P H Stoll, Esq., with graceful
and appropriate remarks. I
Following is the programme of the exercises: i

Early Protest Against Tea.
The introduction of tea into Eu- i
ropean communities met with eon- !
siderable protest. In Germany tea
dealers were considered immoral,
md many pamphlets were publish- i
ed condemning the use of tea in !
my form. Tea was first brought to :
England from Holland in 1666.
Soon the drinking of it became j
fashionable in London, and a pound j
sf the leaves sold for 60 shillings, j
rhomas Garway was the first dead- i
?r in tea in England. He recora- j
mended it as a cure for all disorders
md sold great quantities of it at a
large profit. Eecorda show that tea
>\iu? at times bean sold in Entfland
for as much as ?10 a pound.

liie Greeks ask what you are doing,
the Chinese want to know if

The Arabs, a devout people, say,
