patronize it so that it would not

Such a system could not be tolerated
forever by a free people and
I when the llrice law was enacted, despite
the stubborn opposition of the
dispensary cohorts, the counties be

iqaitous institution, and the ultradispensaryites,
seeing ruin threatening
the G M I, are trying to eKe
out its span ot life by legal technicalities
and injunctions.
But it will not avail. The system
is doomed, and while the course
taken bv the obstructionists may,

perhaps, prolong the agony, it but
makes more certain the inevitable
result?the predestinate end of the
present dispensary system in South
Carolina..
The Black Mingo Vote.
The State .says in line burst of
jscornful enthusiasm:
Black Mingo, Williamsburg
county, holds the dispensary record.

Black Mingo is dear to the hearts
of the faithful and justly so.There is
no more enlightened community in
South Carolina and none where th"
moral code is higher. A Virginian
of distinguished ancestry only recently
said of it that a residence there
would compel any man to be a gentleman.
It is an old community and
some of the brightest names in Revolutionary
history spmng from it.
Major John James, the hero of the
Georgetown episode,is buried within
a few miles of it. Its splendid planj
tations and cultivated people are
ever the subject of remark. The
South Carolinian who does not know
Black Mingo and its people, from
headwaters to mouth, has much to
n. The polling precinct is the
jting place foi Rome and Rhems
and from the very spot two large
steamers ply ~g?- I u*ly to Georgetown
and even yec t.-ey le nnable to handle
the swelling trade. It is the best
section in Williamsburg county in
every sense of the word and there is
no better anywhere. Its splendid
vote for the dispensary is a high tribute
and shows the strength of the
dispensary principle with the best
people of the State?Georgetown
Field.
We endorse everything said by the
Field in praise of the good people of
Black Mir.go; but we do not believe
that the overwhelming vote given
the dispensary at that precinct necessarily
implies that all the best and
most patriotic people of South Carol'lut
or Williamsburg county uphold
the Great Moral Institution. No,

no, contemporary, there are many
! citizens of this county just as good
i and just as patriotic as the people
of
Black Mingo, who voted solidly
agauist the dispensary. For instance,
' take Salters, where the count showed
I twenty-five to nothing anti-dispen
iary. The voters of Williamsburg
did their own thinking in the receut
election aj?d the fact that they voted
for or against the dispensary is bv no
means indicative of their ignorance
or enlightenment. People, who

The people of Anderson county
have shown their emphatic disapproval
of the dispensary system by a
large majority. Their action is in
thorough keeping with the traditions
of the county/which has always stood
for temperance and law and order.
The dispensary issue came up before
the voters squarely on its merits,and
the result must be taken as their
sober veidicton a system that has
been tried and found wanting.^
Now that the dispensary has been
voted out, it is the duty of every
citizen to lend his iufluence in having
the law enforced. There have
been few blind tigers in the county ^
in recent years, and there is no reason !
why their number should increase, j
Public sentimeut of the right kind I

that it Will uphold with a tirin hand
the cause of law auil order when the I
first attempt is made to violate the

laws of the State by the illicit sale
of liquor. The people of the couii- ;
ty have done wisely in rejecting the
dispensary. A little revenue has
been lost, but what is that to be computed
with the incalculable gain to
follow in other ways 1 j making hap-;'
pier horiies and training up a better
citizenship?
The issue has been fairly and hon- i
estly settled at the ballot box, and!
there is no reason why a contest
should be instituted. This has been
done in other counties. The dispensary
advocates will on'y do their
cause harm by any attempt to set
aside the will of the people.
The county was never in a more
prosperous couditiou than it is today i
and we believe that the removal of i
th?; dispensary will make no little
advance in its further progress and
