i'. . * The board of State election commissioners

house for the purpzse of canvassing
the returns of the election held on
November 21 on the question of
"dispensary'' or "no dispensary",
Messrs S G McDonald and J lv Cox,
a majority of the board beiug present
Mr S G McDonald was made
*\ chairman afid Philip Stoll, Esq.,
clerk.
Jo?; Before the votes were canvassed,
W' LeRoy Lee, Esq., appearing in help,;-half
of MM Rodgers, dispenser at
Sy .Lake City, filed a protest ugainst
- ' "The said election and moved that on
L_\' account of certain alleged irregular'< ,
*t ities set forth the same be declared
; null and void.
R J Kirk, Esq., opposed Mr Lee's
motion, declaring it unfair to decide
I"' the matter without the other
side bting represented by counsel.
After hearing the argument pro
. ^ and con the board decided to postDone
their decision uutil Tuesday,
, December 12, in order that both
sides may have an opportunity to be
heard in the matter.
Frqm the standpoint of a layman
it looks like a very peculiar pioeeeding
on the part of the board of cau.
vassers to cortsider a protest or acton
a motion for adjournment before
tabulating the vote and declaring
j the result. No one is supposed to
l^^,;km>w-thj6Aitely the result of the
election until "the votes are canvassed,
fcc and when the official count is de%<
clared, it seems to us, would be the
proper time to entertain a protest.
We may be mistaken in the matter,
but that is the way it appears to us.

A "Quilting' Party.
One of the most delightful social
[affairs of the season was the "quilting
party" given Tuesday evening
fioin 8 to 12 by Mrs Amelia Scott,
at her home on 'North Academv
street, in honor of Miss Mary El
Forbes, of Baltimore, Md., who is !
visiting Mrs M F lluler. A large
quilt was stretched on a frame in !
the center of the room and each
couple strove to cover the most territory
in the way of stitching. The
gentlemen kept the needles threaded
and the ladies, in appropriate costumes,
did the quilting. The novel
contest became interesting and exciting
and [after several hours of
keen and sharp competition Miss
Dell Van Keuren and Mr Muldrow
Burgess were adjudged the success- '
ful contestants. The prizes, a dainty
work basket and a gayly decorated
pipe, were delivered to the respective
winners bv Mr C W Wolfe with
a few fitting remarks.
Tempting refreshments w ere
served during the evening.
The guests were: Miss Mary
Forbes,Mr and .nrs William iiarriss (
t'arr, Mrs J L Bass, Misses Alma ,
Kelley, Mamie Jacobs, Bertha
Hodge, Lizzie McClary,? Mouzon,
Lula Epps, Barbara Jacobs, Dell

Lake City. Nov. 28: Dr II L

and was in towj\ during the day.
Lelioy Lee, Est) , of Kiugstree
was here a few hours Monday < n
professional business.
Messrs L O Hollo way and (has.
M Kelley went to Sumter this week
to examine some concrete buildings
that are being put up in that city.
Both these gentlemen will build at
an early day and they are looking
into the merits of concrete as to
durability, protection against lire,
cost and appearance, with the view
of using that material in case it possesses
real merit in these essential
particulars.
Former Supervisor B B Chandler
was noted here from Kome last
Monday. By tin* way, this correspondent
has it upon good authority
that a number of Mr Chandler's
friends are already urging him to
be in the race for supervisor again
next summer.
This recalls the fact that on Monday
we had in town the present, superviser,
Mr J J Graham, his predecessor,
Mr Chandler, and one who
will seek to become his successor.
We refer to Mr J B V Gaskins.
From information at qlose hands we
think he will ceitaiuly be in the
race. Should all three enter (lit
ring, there will l>e "something doing"'
in old Williamsb'vrg next sum
rati . The primary is a long way
off yet and if the political pot is
simmering already, which seems to
he the case, the probabilities are
that by the time sap begins to rise
next spring it will be a little more
than lukewarm.
Mr J B Gwinn, who is a member
of the Spartanburg bar, spent last
Thursday in town 011 professional
business.
Mr J D King has purchased two
lots 011 Church street, next to the
King Warehouse and also that lot
containing about two acres,, which
includes all the unoccupied land in
the centre of the same block. On
Church street he will build his
duel liner The rest of the land will

be devoted to pack houses, e.c. for
liis large tobacco business.
Mr J W Coward of Kiugstree was
in town a short - while Monday
night.

is a silver, Spanish coin, of just
about the weight of a dollar, than
which it has a larger diameter but
is thinner. The date is 1779 and
it was issued during the reign of
Charles IV. Since being cleaned
the letters, devices and figures stand
out very distinctly, which together
with other evidences, indicate that
the coin was in general circulation
only a short time when placed where
it lay buried until this year of grace.
What memory this old coin recalls!
How the whirligig<of time has spun
around as this old earth swept "adown
the linging grooves of change"
since this bit of silver dropped from
the dies! In the count of aeons but
a span; yet how rich, how various in
events of moment and happenings
of portent! Charles the Fourth is
gone but this silver piece lives on
and so does the name and fame of
our illustrious one who died the year
this coin was minted! Who was he?
