( IFOLEYS HONFF^TAK H Or Wfa Afo opiate* BY WAY OF 'i VINDICATION.. if ! i SCENES AT INQUEST OVER MR WILSON'Si i BODY DESCRIBED BY j; EYE WITNESS. ! j Editor County Kecord: Will J1 you please allow me space M in \*/\nr ivi lnaKlii 111 in li w 111 ^ vindicate the grood name of some I . ] of our brave and noble men who* ] assembled a; tlie jury of inquest |< of Mr Julian Wilson of our coun- j1 ty, which I regret very much 1 having to refer to, but,'after ' such false and slandering state- ' ments as have been sent out to ] the world by R J K in the News | < and Courier of the 17th instant, jl I feel it my duty, as an eye witness at the horrible scene, to 1 give a correct and conservative ( statement to the press, which I ? tried to do an article sent the 1 News and Courier on the 23rd 1 instant, which for some reason has not appeared in pijnt. At 1 this time I will leave the public 1 to judge, after reading my state- * ment and comparing it with li J 1 K's report and editorial of News 1 and Courier of same date, why ^ it has not been published. * In the article referred to KJK ' in News and Courier attempted 1 to give a description of the < iVtn 4- ?ionAvnV\1 A/1 **4 4K rv t fiuwu mat addciiiuiuu at uj^ scene of one of Williamsburg's 1 aoblest citizens lay murdered at the hands of Arthur Williams ind other brutes of the negro race. In describing the scene liJ Ivfrom life .,ruliife, the wbrld would believe that he was an ?ye-witness at the scene, while tie was not, and was sixteen niles away. In this article he would have the public to believe that it was nothing more than a irunken mob. This is false from start to finish, and already has aeen disputed by Mr J F Cooper, but just here Mr Cooper failed to vindicate any but those in his :ommunity. 1 am sure, however, tiiat this was clearly an oversight in Mr Cooper when he wrote his short piece to the News and Courier. 1 will substantiate what Mr Cooper said, kV?.?4- v* At o rl *?n *-* lr ?n 'i n mat lilCl C was I1UL il UI uurv uiun ,>n the place during the entire ^ lay, as I was at the scene in i two or three hours after our ? xiend's body was found, and I ' emained there during the day a md night until Sunday morn- t ng, My indignation rose to the 1 lighest while I viewed the body c )f a dear friend so brutally 1 nurdered but kept it down, as 1 nany others did, In fact the ? whole crowd tried to keep down 1 though it .was hard. Ever}- 1 lour during the day until one * jt two o'clock Saturday night, s urave, armed and determined c men were coming in from va- r rious parts of the county. In- f iiantown section, the home c where Mr Wilson was born and z raised and lived all hi.- life was ' > fThan f JUl 111 I U?l H'l VI. % J- UVU VU1X1V- I men from Partes, Johnsonville, z Borne, Prospect, Cedar Swamp,! c Lake City, in fact a!! parts!j where they could reach the 2 scene by several "hours ride. By 1 3ne or two o'clock Saturday I light I suppose the crowd nutn- i uered 150 or 200 men. Out of t that crowd a close observer a night detect six or seven men z who were the least bit drunk, a a tew others may have had a drink aut not to be detected, I have lever seen a more orderly crowd du such a scene when brave men's blood would boil in their ] reins when they looked upon ] the brutally murdered body of t their kin and friend for he who t was not akin was a dear, close t triend to the murdered man. Our 5 worthy sheriff and worthy so- I licitor were present as stated 1 by others. Their indignation < would run as high as any oth- s ers during the day and night, 1 but they would try to keep it 1 down under such trying circum- 1 stances. They both deserve 1 jTeat praise for the cool manner n which they acted. Now, as to how the accused ley;ro,Arthur William.was saved :rom beiny riddled with bullets lot as 11 J K would have you to relieve, not, as he said by reiortiny to arms, nor by harsh ind offend iny words from our heriff nor no one else. Just lere I make the positive asser:ion voiced by every man on that yround, I believe, that there ivas not a man there who purnosed to lose his life lor the prute we were protecting. As stated, not protected as K J K ivould have it believed, but by -ciml pleading by our sheriff, solicitor Wilson, a son of our nurdered friend, W C Wilson, ) V Cooper, G L Sauls, K W Brown, J L) Carter, P I) Snowlen, the writer and many others two numerous to mention. The pleadings were to save lim for the sake of getting others whom we believed to be is guilty as Arthur Williams, El J K says too much praise canlot be said for Sheriff Graham, i>s, that much is true, but Sherflf Graham and Solicitor Wilson vill bear me out in saying" the same for all the brave and no-j pie men that 'stood so closely inited during the day and night, n fact the whole crowd, even ;hose who unfortunately had a ittle too much drink, were eady to hear to hear to reason is soon as our object4 for proecting the accused < was explained to them. V T IT + \r cn IV U XV UUUC Llli^ OUJ a Hi Graham stood at "the door where ;he prisoner was with pi?tol in land and said: "The first man hat crosses this threshold will lie. " I believe Sheriff Graham vijl bear me out in saying there s not a word of truth in such a itatement. Sheriff Graham is a Drave man, and a brave man vith good sense knows how to ict and when to speak. In fact,i [ don't believe Sheriff Graham lad a pistol. If he did I am jositive no one knew it unless hey touched it on his person in lie rush for the negro. Sheriff Iraham and others stood at the loor barring it after we got the legro into the room. Smiling ivery time I saw him, pleading vitb the men who were all his dose friends, in about these vords: The men to him?"Sherff, we know, but for God's sake five us the negro.''The Sheriff? 'No, not tonight. Let us get ill." In fact these were about he words of all the coolestleaded citizens, and as soon as >ur worthy solicitor, that I beieve the whole people of Wil iamsburg are proud of, and alnost the whole crowd present lad implicit confidence in what le said, promised that he would use all his influence to get *a peedy trial in the courts, the rowd quieted down and comn e n c e d returning to their lomes, hoping the court would lo its duty,as all peaceable citi:ens should do. Such writing as R J K's is alculated to enrage the citi:ens against our sheriff ~and All )ther cool-headed citizens in ust such another case. 1 hope ill good citizens will not beieve the words given out by I J Iv as coming from our^sherff and hereafter will hear to he cool pleading of our sheriff ind all other cool-headed citi;ens and not act too hastily at tny time.
