i k
Editor Conntv Record: !,,
i n
As much has been said pro and j j,
con on the dispensary, I would just 'a
like to touch on it a little from a ! j,
Christian standpoint. Now, MrJ^j
Editor, we cannot mix oil with I
wate -. We cannot mix Christianity L
with sin, or that which is evil. We j
cannot serve God and the devil. God j0
does not compromise the ?ery least j jr
iota with sin or evil, for Christ <ays, j jj
"He that is not for me is against r<
nie, and he that gatheivth not with
me scatteretn abroad." Now, Mr
Editor, can Christians support this a
whiskey evil? I answer, no. They ^
will not because it is admitted by all tp
men to be a great evil, and our
Christian convictions will not allow aj
us to do so, because it is evil anu
tends to immorality. The holy
Scriptures say, "Cursed is lie that
putteth the bottle to his neighbor's r,
mouth and maketh him drink." ?
Mr Editor, the State of South Carolina
is resting under this curse, and w
every voter who casts his ballot for ^
this w hiskey traffic is resting un- 0j
der this curse; every one that
stands for whiskey stauds tj
for intemperance and all the evil ^
brought on by the use of whiskey. j1
Shall we any longer disregard the (j)
widows' tears and sorrows, and the j
poor orphans' civ by imposing this
wlnskev curse upon a civilized and Q]
Christianized people, three-fourths w
at least (or more) that are members ^
of some branch of the Christian
C(
church, professing to-be followers ^
of the meek and lowly Nazarene?
We see plainly, Mr Editor that the ^
only place for the Christian is in re
the ranks of the prohibitionists. We ci
may have mauy in our ranks that ^
are not Christians who are doing j1(
all they can for the cause, but one tc
thing is sure and that is we will w
have no Christians in the anti pro- P;
hibitionist ranks against lis. If ^
they are t lie re they are against the q(
cause of Christ mihI the church, and J<
cannot be followers of Christ. They al
may be in name but cannot be at
heart. Impossible.
Talk about revenue! God help
the so-called professing Christian
that will forsake Almighty God
* ? i > i ii rr> l .i I'

Jepth of sin some will go for money!
Yea, many are ready to rob our
good women of their husbands,
children of their fathers, and cause N
widows and orphans to he thrown
upon the cold charities of the world
bv dealing out this crime-making
o ? m
soul-destroying liquid damnation to ot
their fellow creatures. Xo! No! We
pi
can't be Christians if we sauction jh
this so-called "Great Moral Insti- j,
tution." We must stand up to our m
Christian profession, otherwise we
are saying to God, heaven and all $i
mankind, we have taken our stand (,!
with sin and Satan, and will sup? ti<
port this "Great Moral Institution"with
all its blighting, soul-making
powers. Mr Editor,-were I to make K
u]) mv mind to vote for this great
evil upon our county I would go to
the church and ask that my name be \j
erased from its roll, confessing my
alliance with sin and Satan, and as jo
not being willing to bring reproach i V
upon the church by professing to be
a Christian, and casting my ballot I'1

against all hope of rescuing the &
nerishinar fiom the liquor curse. We J;
1 ? u;
must choose this day whom we will k
serve: if tiiw Lord be God let us ^
serve him: if Satan, then let us cast |<
our ballots for the dispensary, dese- u
cration, and destruction.
And now Mr Editor, a word to you.
I just wish you could hear the eoaij
pliineuts being paid you and The
. Record by our Christian men and ?
i women foi your noble stand in a li
nobl" can. The RECORD and its 11
, noble editor are growing daily in ^
popularity with our people and will
always occupy the highest position
of " * Temperance.
The Elder Brstber.
We have carefully read w
"The Elder Brother," by Theo- e
dore D Jervey, of Charleston,
which, in the language of the s
author, is "a novel in which are o
resented the vital questions
o\v confronting' the South
rowing" out of Reconstruction,
i which the author defines the
rue relations between the races
ow existing in the South.'' The
louth?and South Carolina in

as the Palmetto State produced

le people among whom the I
:enes are laid That "a prophet!
; not without honor save "in his

isignticunt place in romantic
terature and poesy that South
arolina occupies today. It is
le fashion to underrate the
orks of native literary aspirnts
whose greatest meed of
raise comes from sources most
istant from the authors' home
We regard Mr .Tervey's book
s the most pretentious work of
:tion we have read from the
en of a native writer dealing
ith post bellum events in South
arolina. The scene is laid in
harleston, called Ellenton, and
le time is about the year 1876,
hen the white people of the
tate resolved to and did throw
T the yoke of Republican mislle.

imiliar to all of us who can reill
the dark days of Recon:ruction.
Asjde from the apparent move
of the book?which is
sally a sociological study?the
irsory reader is entertained
ith a cleverly told story which
Dlds the attention from start

ith the negro problem in a disassionate

aboyating his theories.
