The office of the Clerk of j Court is in good condition and neat- j ly kept. His cash bqpk shows a! balance on hand of $2732.02 belonging to various estates. These funds are deposited in tile Rank of Kingstree. 2nd. The Judge of Probate's of- j i fice we found in good condition and | books properly kept except t at some'' are not indexed. His ca.^_ book)1 shows a balance, in his hands as i public guardian, of $1303.51. Said money is deposited in Hank of Kings- j tree. j 3rd. The officers of the Super; visor, Treasurer and Supt of Edu! cation were examined together and are all neatly kept. Lake City and Scrautou weie examined hv this committee ml so far as we could ascertain these dispensaries were at the time i>f examination properly run. For some time previous to the examination the request books were not kept and the returns that should have been made to the Auditor vere neglected. Tl is, however,is now projterly done and we believe that fie fonnty di ipensaiies are rn-v a.-cord ing to law. 6th. From our examination ot the hooks in the oupt of Education, Auditor and Treasurer's offices we noted that $9809.04 of the school funds were brought, forward from last year and that some schools in certain tomships ran only a few months w hen there were sufficient funds to have run much longer. This, we believe is due to the carelessness and efficiency of the school trustees and we recommend that the proper authorities take such steps as is necessat v to remedy this. 7th. The chain gang was visited hv this committee and the condition [)f same was found good. The prisoners were well cared for as was attested by conversation with them. Red Spkings. N. C., Oct. 9:j The Southern Presbyterian col-1 lege and Conservatory of music, j Red Springs, N. opened Sep tember 12, 1903, with an enrollment of 275 students. 1 i I Twelve States arc represented ? Wisconsin, Ohio, New York, i Virginia, West Virginia, Nbrth i Carolina, South Carolina, Geor-i i gia. Florida, Alabama, Missis-! sippi and Tennessee. Never be-1 fore have the prospects of this! widely known college been as favorable. The faculty,consist-: ing of twenty-nine members, is; a body of tine educators and is doing very successful work. Dr Vardell, the president, a! very capable man of practical j business sense, has the super vision of the whole college and j gives it his personal attention, j Tile girls all love, honor and respect him. A very pleasant and interest- j ing feature of the college is the literary societies, Epsilon Chi, j artd the Zetesian. These so- j cieties were organized in 1S97,: their aim being to promote sor-inl HninvrriHTit ;ind ;i taste for ? standard literature. "The Pine and Thistle," the college monthly, is edited con jointly by the two societies. A Young Woman's Christian i Association ^composed of 175 members is doing a splendid! work. Social prayer meetings, are held every Sunday and Wednesday evenings and missionary meetings once a month. The association supports an orphan at Barjuni Spring Orphanage. The college plant now con tains seven buildings.
