v^BRUTALLY MURDERED.
*8F THE BLOODY DEED-CORK
JURY FIXES CRIME ON
THREE NEGROES.
s of the brutal murder of
Julian Wilson at Cooper
tofiice.last Friday night
ached here early Saturday
aorning, causing a thrill of horror
throughout the whole town.
Mr Wilson was well known in
Kingstree and had man y friends
to whom the details of the horrible
manner in which he came
to his death were harrowing in
the extreme. Coroner Gamble
having been notified, that official
in company with Dr W V
Brockinton repaired to the
scene on Saturday afternoon to
hold an inquest over the body
of the deceased.
Sheriff Graham and Solicitor
Wilson, who had btfen on a deer
hunt, spent Friday night not far
\trom Cooper postoftice and as
^oon as they heard of the crime
lastened to the scene.
yWhat can be learned of the
^edy is as follows: Mr WjIa?_employed
as manager
of the business of W P Cooper
& Co., consisting of a store,
grist mill and cotton ginnery,
and slept in a room in the rear
of the store building. On Sat- 1
urday morning the back aoor of
the building was found broken
open and on investigation the
dead body of Mr Wilson was
discovered lying behind and
partly under the counter in the
* front part of the building.Three
K ghastly wounds were visible on '
his head, one of which, inflicted 1
behind, crushed the bones of the
skull. Outside the door in the
j-ard was found the instrument 1
> ~ of death?a piece of board used
for greasing wagons, on which 1
wpre to be seen splashes of blood 1
and hairs from the head of the
^murdered man. The dead man

^ iu li.ts time seems to 1
^<e developed the most damping
points of evidence against 1
Z1, Arthur Williams. He had been 1
M in the employ WP Cooper & Co., <
ftad Mr Wilson recently found it 1
1 ljeeessary to discharge him. For
this reason he was heard to '
make threats against My Wilson 1
^ boasting that he intended to kill 1
him. Moreover tracks were
^ virible leading fro^n the store {
across an adjoining field and .
these tracks were exactly fitted \
by Wil].mms' feet when the test
\ Was made and the marks of a (
\ broken' shoe tallied with the (
pair of shoos worn by Williams ,
when be was arrested. Another
' aging point of evidence :
nst Williams was the tindof
a pair of pants missed
the store in the house that i
occupied. ]
;hen% this vidence was

against the prisoners and a

man, well liked by everyone who
knew him. The news of his
|ieath traveled fast and when
the horrible circumstances were
learned men from all parts of1
the county were soon hurrying)
to Cooper's store to be present
it the inquest.
Ho,w Hie sheriff and the solici-1
I
tor and those who seconded
their efforts prevented a lynching
is graphically told by the
Kinj^stree correspondent o the
Coumbia State, whose story of
the night's stirring events is as
follows:
Kingstree, Oct. lb:?Tile his 1
tory of Williamsburg county i
has just escaped a most bloody
chapter in the sequel to the
death of Mr Julian Wilson, the
aged gentleman who was so
brutally murdered in the store
of W P Cooper & Co., sixteen 1
miles below Kingstree, last Kiiday
night. and serious trouble
was several times during Saturday
night averted by the pres- !
ence of Sheriff Graham and
Solicitor John S Wilson.
News of the crime was rapidly
spread throughout the coun- 1

seen making" their way to the
scene ali during" the day, from
early morning until 2 or 3 o'clock
Saturday night.* On all roads
leading to the store from every
direction, men traveling in every
conceivable conveyance, some
riding horseback, some in buggies,
some in wagons and some
walking, made their way to the
place of the tragedy. The most
serious events of the gathering
occurred after dark when several
attempts were made to gain
possession of the negro Arthur
Williams and once he was almost
within the hands of the
crowd, but by rapid and vigorous
work the sheriff secured him
again and locked him up in one
of the roonis of the store and
placed a heavy guard on duty.
Solicitor Wilson jumped up
on the counter and made an |
earnest plea that the law should
be allowed to take its couise
and promising that he would
make every effort to secure a ,
special term of court for the
purpose of giving the negro an
immediate trial. The sons of the

be not lynched, with an
argument that they might not
yet have the right man, and
even if they did have the right
man, a lynching now would cut
off the prospects of catching the
others who were supposed to be
implicated in the murder.
The solicitor and the sheriff
and his supporters deserve
much credit for the masterly
manner in which they protected
the prisoner and held the maddened
crowd at bay, for as the
sheriff remarked, "It wjsa hot
time,"
He reached town yesterday !
morning with four negroes,
Arthur Williams, Jenkins Burrows,
Miller Harrison and John
Scott, who were placed in jail
and are strongly suspected with
having played some part in the
tragedy.
The coroner reached the scene

The remains of the murdered
man were interred yesterday .

church yard of the old Indian- .
town church in thp presence of
the largest crowd ever noted at
i funeral in this section of the (
county.
VERDICT OP CORONER'S JURY, j
The adjourned coroner's in- 1
^uest met again on Tuesdiy ^nd 1
liter carefully weighing all the
evidence,rendered the following
verdict: rnat me c.eceaseu
:an;e to his death at the hands
of Arthur Williams, Jenkins Bur- j
rows and Robert Scott. The ,
jury of inquest was composed of :
men of unusual intelligence and
discretion, with former super- visor
B B Chandler as foreman.
The evidence against the fourth >
negro Harrison under suspicion j
is so slight the jury did not feel j
warranted in finding a verdict
against him.
SOME NEW EVIDENCE.
The three negroes implicated
by the coroner's jury seem to
he nrettv deeDlv in the toils and
the chain of circumstantial evi:
dence is being forged link by
link. When arrested one of the
parties, Jenkins Burrows, had
several shells in his pocket
splotched with bloofj. On Tuesday
his House was searched and
a shot gun discovered with
blood-stains on the stock. Then
on the same day, in a thicket
near the shanty across the road
which had been occupied by
Arthur Williams, was fecund a
shot-gun identified as one/which
had been in the store of trooper
& Co. On the stock of this gun i
several blood-stains are visible.
There were also found in the
same spot several boxds of
shells exactly lik^ the b~
stained ones in the negro Bur
rows' pocket and also a new hat.
The strongest evidence against
Robert Sc. .1 is the fact that a
pair of broken shoes was found j
in his house which titted tracks:
in the tie Id near the store, the j
breaks being distinctly shown- I
in the tracks referred to and ex--1
actly corresponding to those in
the shoes.
Solicitor Wilson was here yes- j
