I THE SAGE OF
POSSUM FORK.!
DISCUSSES TAINTED MONEY AND HOLDS
THAT "THE ALTAR SilNCTIFIETH
THE OIFr"
Editor County Record:?I have
been reading.with much interest the
; pros and cons of the "tainted monI
ey'' dilemma and feel like compliI
menting the Brooklyn Eagle for its
j very sensible conclusion: that mouev
ey does not luint, and if it. did, the
taint-would be re'noved by putting
the money to good use. The strange
infatuation with which the divines
and some of the best writers holdout
against receiving gifts from unholy
contributors to church purposes is
as surprising as curious. Let us go
to headquarters, the Bible, for advice:
"And Jesus beheld the people
cast their money into the treasury
and many that were rich cast in
much; but a a certain jioor widow
cmsi in two miles, and he said: 41
say unto you that this poor widow
hath cast in more than they ull;<for
she hath cast in all the living that
she had. Truly it was more to her
than all the large gifts were to the
rich, and the Lord valued it because
it was such a sacrifice. But
all was God's money and "the altar
sanctifieth the gift"?Matthew xxiii,
19. "The cattle upon a thousand
l:ii. *i? t.....i .ir?.
IIIIIS iHC ililliC, OilJUl lUf JJUiU, IVI
the world is mine and the fulness
thereof.*' All in the Jewish nation
was required to castnnto the treasury,
and can any oue suppose for i
moment that there were no unholy
conuihutors in that crowd? But
"the altar sanctifieth the gift.'"
Now when the gifts are cast into
the treasury the responsibility of
the contributor is at au end, and it
is then up to God's stewards (the
preachers) to put the Lord's money
to work evangelizing the world.
Their actions can clog the gospel
wheels or roll 011 the good wort;
therefore, if any of God's creatures
bring au offering, be that creature
good or bud, ic is God's mouey aul
his stewards dare not refuse it nor
neglect to. put it to work.
The Lord rules the universe of
millions of suns and systems by ceitaiu
automatic laws. Ouce having
been put in notion the centrifugal
and centripetal forces of propulsion
and gravitation are automatically
evened up so that each system revolves
and travels in its proper
sphere obedient to Original Purpose,
and He also rules the nations of the
rarth. He made man the highest
type of pre-agency and gave him
certain laws to obey aud holds him
him responsible. If one is a failure
he puts in another, that the ecouorhX
of his government shall r ot fail.
God rules and says. My word
shall not return unto #me void but
shall accomplish that whereuuto t
sent it. Of Ephraim of old he*said:
"Let him alone; he is joined to his
idols.'' And of certain wicked disbelievers
St Faul says: "God will
send stroug delusion tthat i hey may
believe a he." And when God says,
"Let him alone" and takes the
promptings of the holy spirit from
him he is left unrestrained and automatically
drift* into strong delusion
and believes a lie? believes that he
oan.buy God's favor with money and
thinks it to be his 0^11 money, but
it is God's money.
The decree is tlW man?not angels?must
carry the gospel to all
the world. The people must put a
part of the Lord's money in the gospel
channel and the stewards must
do the work. But 1 do think the
ridiculous quibbling over the reception
of Mr Rockefeller's $100,000
missionary gift is a sin against God's
ruling economy, as well ugaiust the
; uncivilized nations for whose benefit
' it was intended; for every good and
perfect gift comes from God, for
God iu His all wise provideuce sends
it if the devil brings it and God's
stewards are standing jii the way if
they refuse it, for "the altar sanctifieth
the gift."
There are thousands and thousands
in our own civilized country
I just as mean a* Rockefeller- and
they hiabitually cast money into
God's treasury, and if the altar does
not sanctify the gift, and if money
really does get tainted, where ?vonld
we drift to?
But one of Omaha's most prominent
divines caps the climax in clogging
the wheels of the gospel chariot
when he says: "If Mr Rockefeller's
wealth was obtained dishonestly the
man, the church, that takes the
money partakes with the thief, so
AAnfimiAfl hid /It'll
fUllj; JW lie UWIHIIIIICO IIIO VMI VVM?WV
without open confession and amendment!"
If so, then a r-eacher, in
hiking a collection,mas - say: "Noiy,
brethren and sisters, we want so
much for church purposes, but only
those who have clean hands aud holy
hearts will be eligible to cast money
into the treasury?no unholy person
must give to the Lord!" How much
would he get? Wouldn't he be clogging
the gospel wheelt? The^giveis,
in that case, must sanctify the gifts,
no need for God's plan, the altar, to
sanctify the gift, apd if a bad man
owes a debt the creditor dares not
receive it for fear of partaking with
the thief!
God knew all these things and
long ago prepared, a plan. Christ's
death on the cross redeems Jthe altar
and the world and "the $ltar sanctitit-til
the gift."
Mr Editor, this filing is getting
almost world-wide and is doing incalculable
liar in . When God's
stewards proclaim that they will receive
110 gifts from uuholv people,
they not only cut off God's church
from that class of contributors but
dishearten the membership by placing
double burdens on the others
and I fear will set the church back
a generation to come. I commend
as sensible and right a certain
preacher's position wheu he said, "I
would say *yes, take it,' and wish it
was a hundred million instead of a
hundred thousand*" Now that kind
of steward would grease up the
chariot wheels and roll on the good
cause.
But here it conies. I have just
read that Rockefeller has sure enough
given one hundred millions mfor general
school purposes?the twin sister
of Christianity. God rules,- and I
thank God for the economy of a
providence that automatically impels
such great bleisings to the good
of maukiud. The Lord sent it, and
I am so sure of it aud so glad of his
gooduess, that I have a good will to
s;gn, '*H E Eaddy," in place of
