f, A STRONG PLEA
FOR PROHIBITION.!
SHOWING THE EVILS OF DRINK AND
THE CORSE OF THE DISPENSARV.
Editor County liecord:
Does the steady increase in the
consumption of intoxicating liquors
iu South Carolina indicate a step]
toward prohibition?
? The factory value of the dis- j
tilled and malt liquors made iu this j
| country in 1900 was $334,068,156. (
cost the men who drank them!
| five or six times that amount, say:
$"2,004,408,936. Now if the people)
I stopped drinkir.g they could with j
the money saveu each year pay all
the distillery and brewery workers j
their present wages, pay the pro-1
prietors of the industry ten per cent1
on their capital, and pay sellers of
material to it ten per cent on their
sales as compensation for loss of I
trade at a total cost of $80,000,000. ]
They might even support, until their]
bread-winners could find work, an i

enormous amount, at least 500,000,-1
000 a venr. Have \ou ever thought j
how eostiy it is to drink liquor and
how much can be saved by not
drinking? Our largest and best
merchants tell me their sales have
been cut not less than tweuty-fivej
per c?nt by the establishment of the]
dispensary at this place and that j
they tou Id feel the effects the very!
first week of its existence.
Many of our best farmers tell me
their farm help has become demora- j
^ lized by the dispensary; hands leave
the good old country farms and flock
to the dispensary town, where they
can loaf around aud pick up enough
job work to buy liquor with.
The disoeusarv is the gieatest. i

tax gatherer this old Stute has ever
een. The daily laborer pays to it1
v "his hard earned money. The farmer!
pays to it his strawberry money, j
his tobacco money, his cotton
money and very often his real estate1
money. The merchant pays Ins
share too. They all pay into the:
liquor treasury money?money that'
should buy dresses for pile faced
women, shoes for bare feet girls and
bread and meat for hungry children. J
Whiskey causes nearly all the
crimes of our lan.i?who pays the
cost of the courts? Does North
Carolina or Kentucky or some other
people? No iudfeL The people
right here in Lake City and Williamsburg
county pay it. The
State sells the poor creature a dollar's
worth of liquor; it crazes him;
tu- goes and commits crimes that,
cost the State thousand? of dollars.
Foi every doliar revenue the State
and county pay their thousands.

Wipe out liquor from the borders
and old Williawsbuig with ten and

The physical effects of liquor are
evident. It interferes with the
chemistry of respiration, It interferes
with the natural process of
nutrition and waste.
Hjt-causes weakening of the heart
structure. It hinders the activity
of the liver. It has an injurious
# effect upon the kidneys, lessening
the discharge of urea, which, retain?d,
becomes a poison to the system
It injures the leucocytes, or "guar
dian cells'' of the body, -Jiose duty
it is to prey upon bacteria and other
organisms. It produces ' delirium

The belief in whiskey us a medicine
is rapidly passing away; the
great majority <>f dorters use it very
cautiously and many will not use it
in any shape whatever.
Comparative death rate bet wee i
the temperance hospitals, where not i
a drop of whiskey is used for anything
at all, and the hospitals where j
whiskey is used are largely in favor
of the temperance hospitals, as you
all know. The eX^eiiments of the
late Prof Newell Martin of John
Hopkins Univcisitj. cf Prof II C
Wood of (he University of Peuosyl- j
vania,of the celebrated investigators,
Kinger and Sainsbury, and others,
have shown that whiskey paralyzes j
and depresses the heart, rather than I
acts as a stimulant. Numbers of,
eminent men could be quoted to'
show the dangers of whiskey medi-;
cation. Now, morally or socially, is I
theic one single good thing about it? ;
No, not one. An institution without j
a single redeeming feature about it, I
what a blot upon ou?* history! Sad j
day lor fcoutu Carolina, sau uay jui
Lake Citv when the dispensary door
was thrown open. Was the investigating
committee found anything
good about it yet? All they reveal
is from bad to worse. Yon can
scarcely travel these roads around
here on Saturdays without some
drunken crowd driving into ycur
vehicle and it humilates snv wouian ;
to have to hear the language used by
people drinking around here, especially
on Saturdays. Now, it was
not that way before the establishment
of the dispensary. None of
us doubt Solomon's wisdom and
even in his day when drink was not |
looked upon as it is today, he said j
| then: "Wine is a mocker, strong
drink is raging and whosoever is
deceived thereby is not wise."
Morally I say in the words of
another, the dispensary is a curse to
any community, a breeder of corruption
and crime, a debaucher of moral
character and a snare of the devil.
The liquor traffic in this its worst
form, nndermine6 the work of the
church, destroys the home aad slays

loyalty to conscience and duty to
oppose the traffic in intoxicating:
liquors, irrespective of the metht-d ;
of distribution. I tell you the dis-1
pensary will make drunkards of
vour sons and drunkards' wives of
r>
your daughters, and wheiL the sad
fact comes home to you, as it has to
me, and some of your owu dear ;
family have been wrecked by this;
monster, then you can appreciate'
the motive that prompted these
lines.
Father, as your httle girl plays
around your knee, in all her iunocence
and beauty, do yon ev?<r
think how long till she will become
a drunkard's wife? Somebody's
daughters are goiug to uiany-drunkards,
maybe it will be yours. Let'*
rise up in our manhood and* quit
making drunkards of our boys and
young men, the hope of our country.
Very often you hear people say
" vVell, the dispensary is the best solution
of the .liquor question'' Well,! tell!
you the dispensary is no solution of j
the liquor question at all. It seems I
a bigger question today than tver
before. Doesn't it? It makes me;

I>eop!e, and especially men in office,
say, ''Prohibition won't prohibit and
the country will be filled with blind
tisrera.'' God knows if there are
not blind timers in South Carolina
today, there never "will be. Some
of these dealers are not very blind
about handling it eithei.
You tell ine a great and good law,;
passed by an overwhelming majority 1
of citizens and backed by the the
moral sentiment the country won't
be a success! You weak-kneed
things?you ought to be made to
wear frocks. I teli you every
moment of whiskey dominant)
tends to fearful issues.
Now iu conclusion. Mr Editor, lej

have taken oil this great question.
God loves the light. You cannot <
lose; for truth is immortal. Those
who stand for it and for its dissemination
are not pleading "a lost;,

iinal triumph, winch is sure.
