W 1 i PROMPT REPLY. "*] WTH# Reward On# Woman Got For Not Procrastinating. I It wi a sad piece of news that { the max brought home from DeWtroit. L concerned his wife's sister's P*amiiyHe told it immediately after As he talked his wife rockeduTand fro on the sofa and cried and said, "Oh, dear; oh, dear!" "Now, mind you," said the man in conclusion, "not a worn to a living, soul about my telling you this. I am not supposed to know it. I only learned it by accident Margaret would have a fit if she thought I even suspected anything. She will | ^ write you all particulars. In fact, I happen to know that she had written the letter before I left. You j ^rill probably get it tomorrow morning, and just as soon as it does come I want you to answer it. You know you have a reprehensible habit of putting off answering letters until they are six months old. You can't do that this time. Margaret needs j sympathy, and you've got to write." ; And the woman did write. She i it .a ol. . wroxe inax very mgnx. one saiu. Dear Margaret ? Tour letter received thla morning. I grieve for you. dear sis- j . ter, from the bottom of my heart. I am so glad that you have confided In me. j Believe me. everything la safe with me. ; Not even to Henry shall I breathe a word j of what you have told me. The woman wrote four more, pages, all in the same strain. When j she had finished she said: "There! Henry can't accuse me this time of procrastination. I have answered that letter promptly enough to please even him." The next morning while the woman was dressing her eye lighted upon the letter. "No doubt I'll hear from Marga-. ret in the first deliver}*," she thought. "I'll mail this now and give it a good start." She stepped across the hall and dropped the letter into the mail chute. Then she began to look for the promised communication from Margaret. It did not come in the first delivery, nor the second, nor yet the third. In fact, it did not come until the end of the week, and then it gave the woman the shock of her life, for it said: Tour letter In reply to the note I had written, but later decided not to send, just received. I appreciate your sympathy and your promises of secrecy, especially your determination not to tell Henry. It is very sweet and thoughtful of you to keep the news from even him. There was more of the letter, but ' the woman did not read it for several days. She was kept too busy formulating rules for the regulation of the future conduct of Henry.?New York Post. v The Canny Scot. In an English railway compartment two travelers were seated, an American and a keen eyed old p Scbtchman. r When the guard came to take up ^ il-l?i_ i.1? He kept the official waiting so long while he rummaged through his many pockets that the ticket taker went on his way, saying he would come back to 1 find out the result of the search. S When the guard had gone the |\ American saw the lost piece of pasteboard protruding from the old f fellow's mouth and promptly noti- A fied its ow?jer, thinking it was a case * of absentmindedness. Whereupon the wily Scot rejoin { ed: "Don't you think 1 know it? But '' the ticket's* a month old, and I'm a-auckin' off the date." t v Animated Telegraph. Shortly after the introduction of 1 the electric telegraph into Scotland a west highlander who had been to Glasgow and was consequently supposed to have got to the bottom of 1 all mysteries was asked to explain * it '^Weel," said he, "it's no easy to explain what you will no be understandin'. But I'll tell ye what it's % like. If you could stretch my collie dog frae Oban to Tobermory an' if you wass to clap its head in Oban a an' it waggit its tail in Tobermory or if I wass to tread on its tail in Tobermory an' it squaked in Oban? that's what the telegraph is like." True Love. "Are you sure you love him?" "Am 1 sure? Do you see this dress?" "Of course I do! What of it?" "Will you kindly tell me if it 4 bears the slightest resemblance to the presem fashion?" "Well, really it?er?it"? "It doesn't?" ^ "No." J "Well, I'm wearing it because he ; likes it."?Paris Journal. Papa's Warning. Daughter ? This piano is really | my very own, isn't it, papa? Tather?Yes, my dear. J "And when I marry I can take it wil|i me?can I ?" j f "Certainly, my child! But don't tell, any one. It might spoil your j chances/' "America." The air "America/' as is well known, is that of England's national anthem, "God Save the King." ' J As such it has been in use since the "middle of the last century. In 1832 Dr. S. F. Smith came upon it in a ^ book of German music and on the j spur of the moment wrote the words we sing to the hymn "America." j t This was at Andover, Mass. It will . be interesting for you boys and girls to know that it was sung for the first time publicly at a children's * celebration at Park Street church, ^ Boston, on the Fourth of July in tiutyear.^ ' - . . y . .
