HOMICIDE IN GEORGETOWN. W H Cox Dead at tbe Hands ot W C James. 7?^ Georgetown, July IT.?Special: Saturday night about '1 o'clock while at the house of a woman in the suburbs of what is known as "New Georgetown," W G James lie-1 came in vol veil in a difficulty with W H Cox. both white, in which James1 k, struck Cox a blow on the lie id, from which he died alxiut 11 o'clock Sun day. The coroner was promptly notified. He empaneled a jury and began an investigation at 3 o'clock. I>rs Olin Sawyer and \V M Gilliam were called in and held 011 autopsy. Alter a number of witnesses were examined th" jury rendered tne following: "That W H Cox came to his death b\ a blow on the side of his head with some kind of a blunt instrument at the hands of W '' .lames." James was committed to jail by the coroner. Mr Cox w ts an employee of the Atlentic Coast Lumber Corporation 1 and was considered by all who knew him to be a gootl, quiet, peucable citizen. James is from Florida, where, it L is said, he hos relations. The svm'< pathy today is with the dead man and his family. Cox's remains will be taken to Lake City, his old home for burial. He leaves a wife and several children. b% . From the testimony at the inquest it appears that the nieu were drinking. The testimony is somewhat conflicting. Cox, it seems, had a pistol and James claimed that Cox was about to shoot him. On the other hand witnesses now say that James struck Cox with a stick when the latter was not attacking him. j Cox went home about 2 or 3 V o'clock and was not known to be seriously hurt. He became unconscious about 6 o'clock in the morn- i ing and soon died. Ilis skull had j been fractured, so the autopsy de- i dared.?News & Courier. DISPENSARY DISCUSSED. S. R. Gordon Relieves In the Present System. Editor Cotnty Record: t, Having seen my name as one of a committee that was appointed to work up a petition for the purpose of voting out the dispensary, I wish to say; - that I don't favor this move* ment. We had prohibition in this countj'before we had this dis-1 pensarv, and it did not do any ornnrl Whislrev was sold in Kingstree almost in the shadow of the court house. In this part r of the county, people that qould not get it shipped to them, constructed tin lard caqs with _ A worms attached and made whiskey, or something that could be, substituted for it that would make them worse drunk than f whiskey. There is no way to prevent 7 the people from making whiskey here in a smuggled way. So what good would it do to vote out the dispensary; what does it all mean? It is just this, the old barroom faction is just tryin?r tr? u-et the disuensarv killed. ?? " O knowing" that some people will have liquor and soon they can be selling it in the old way. To show howjrotten this thing is, the so-called prohibitionists ran their candidates in the primary election and were badly defeated. Their most substantial support came from men that love whiskey, or sore-headed politicians that wanted something new to help them into office, or someone that could not even get a start off unless they' got it in some unusual way. i The same people that is push-i mg this voting out of the dispensary over the state now, is the same old barroom faction in disguise. This is the way they, manage it, they see that their force is too small to make a straight out fight under their *ttvn colors, but thev see there itre a few that are so short-1 sighted as to believe that there 1 :s such a tiling as prohibition! *nd that they can stop men from drinking whiskey. There are I others wh* want somethingstarted, so they can be tije tirst Jto jump on the|band-wagon as;? ride into office* they all consol- ( i^ate and call themselves "Pra-1 hibitionists." The free schools are getting.-a substantial support from the aiispeiLsarv, and there are jae;i' Is.,. 1 * ' who will not spend one cent on schooling their children, but do spend all they make on whiskey and this is the only, way their children can jLi'et any of it. The dispensary is the best way to? manage the whiskey til.'it li:i< (ivpp V * V* I started. So what is the use of starting it up'/ Something worse would follow. Your truly, S. B. When the grains of maize or Inr./N r\ rfnrt f 1 \r yr\Q + flU UlUil I'Ul II MIC ^CUbU lwaovvu vxivj burst with a pop and turn inside out. They are then known as popcorn. This popping is due to the evaporation of the oil contained in ! the kernel. Ordinary wheat does not pop so readily because the outer portion of the kernel is more porous and thus permits the escape of the oil as it evaporates. In the case of popcorn a great pressure is developed in the kernel by the confined oil, which is present in greater quantity, so that the kernel is suddenly I exploded and reversed. The inhabitants of "The Huh ot the Universe" are said to have their own ideas of their own importance. The comic artists for years have reaped a rich harvest in caricaturing the wise Boston children. A story which is attributed on good authority to Henry James hits off this Boston attitude to perfection. At a dinner party Mr. James told the storv of a Back bay Boston lady who in one sweeping classification spoke of "the people living below Beacon street, New Yorkers and that class of people."?New York Herald.
