I VT Article Printed in THE
I Br County Record:
^H^^ur article copied fruni the
Virginia Pilot, on "Newspaper
Slush,'' is timely "and should be
H copied nut only in print but in
SB opinion by all newspapers. The
pulpit and the press, more than any
other sources, control public
opinion from the fact that not one
r man or woman out of ten has an
opinion of theii own. In other
^yords, the positive characters are
^<^fevr compared with the negative
characters, and strange as it may
appear, the positive charactei is at
a discount in the government of
State and country. It is only to the
man who can be on all sides and
offend none that political honors go;
hence the degeneracy in statesmanship
that we now witness. But J
am digressing somewhat. As 1 said
before, the pulpit and the press are
more responsible lor public opinion
and consequently, public honesty
and morality,than any other agency.
If this is true?aud we defy truthful
contradiction?then it behooves
both pulpit and press to see that 110

honesty, and no quesiionable
morality is foisted upon the public.
It is true that newspapers are pub-j
wlished as financial enterprises, and
^ hence aiust to some extent cater to
V the appetites of the people to warrant
success; yet there is a vast difference
between newspaper discretion
and newspaper dishonesty, and
the sauie can be said of the pulpit.
The extremes mentioned in the
article published can be honestly
harmonized. Abuse and ridicule of
the individual should never be tolerated,
neither should false praise be
accorded anyone. The rule to observe
silence when no good can be
said is a just and good rule. It injures
no-one; 011 the contiary, a bad
character eulogized and liiaJe an- _

harm morally. A man dies. His p
conduct ha; been not that which we p
should imiiate. He has been a lib- y*
eral subscriber to the church and e
its annexes and his minister paints n
him in heavenly colors and mourns t
his departure as a public loss. There b
is no excuse for this; it is dangerous \
ana demoralizing to those left be- f
4 hind. Man is prone to evil as the c
sparks fly upward. So every indi- h
vidual, who can in the life of an- b
other read approval of his own short- d
comings, will by the church claim g
approval of his own immoralities n
and continue them with the blind ii
assurance by the church that he is g
on the right road to heaven. What a
, ^ incalculable harm is thereby done, t
\nd when at the end of life, how (3
many, realizing the utter hopeless- p
nesa of their case, can point to this t
/ false encomium us the starting-point
in their downward career. And yet,
snch iucidents are not uncommon
and excusable upon the plea that,
we should speak well of the dead.
At present the press is filled with ^
discordant views as to the reception ! ^
! by the church of tainted money.;1
' The money is not tainted. Its re- ( c
ception can do the church no harm ^
from that false standpoint, but it is>
a lesson to futurity that will work 1
corruption when we give encouragement
to the methods by which the t
money was accumulated bv accept- f
ing the same and honoring the don- j
or. For w hen we accept his or her r
gift, we can't in reason and common j c
decency coudemu the giver, "Come; c
<>of from anions them," have | f
J" "" ? - I
nothin<r f<> do with ihem or their r
gifts and we lessen the desire for i
moiirv dishonestly acquired. Social
ostracism would have more effect t
upon making men do rignt than any v
other punishment, but when known }
thieves are upheld by society and |<
eulogized bv the church, honesty; (
stands a poor chance, and the preacher
who takes this money with the g
expectation that it will be purified:

vuwaic wi.
W And what has beer, said of the
church applies with equal force to
the press. Immoral or dishonest advertisements,
though they bring j
gain to the paper, entail loss of both , *
k character *nd substance to the read- \
" er, and should be avoided. No re- |
putable newspaper should publish t
these get-ricii-quick, and gambling ^
advertisements. How many defal- ]
cations, how many ruined families, j <
how many suicides, could yearly be 1
averted if this class of matter were ]

1 ROMANTIC MARRIAGE.
liss Maggie Epps of Cades Becomes
Mrs M#P Davis.
Early on the morning of th*- 4th
f Julv in the little town of Cades
here was a wedding. Just as the
11 u began to make his appearance
ver the horizon, two happy young
eople met at a minister's house in
hat quiet little town. They were
A P Davis and Miss Maggie Kpps.
.'ht good minister soon knew their
liss ion and while many people in
he peaceful little village were still
lumbering, he read the pretty vows,
rhich made them man and wife.
It was one of those romantic runJ
way matches and took their many
riends bv surprise, a pleasant surprise.
Mr and Mrs Davis boarded
he morning train, passing through
Florence and spending the day in
Jarimgton. from mere mev wem
o Conway, where they will make
heir home.
Mr and Mrs Davis were in town
ast night going back to Cades to
ipend a few days with the bride's
parents before starting out on life's
ourney. Mrs Davis was a popular
wing girl of Cades and her many
young friends wish her much happiless.
She is still in her teens and
t was because of her youthfulness
hat the wedding had to be a runaway
one. Mr Davis is an enterprising
