woods resound with the melody of
f their cheerful voices. Intervening
years have not dimmed the vivid
coloring with which memory has

adorned those joyful days of child- j
hood, and for the home of my first
love, for the place where the wild
^^^^Icmiers! grow as beautiful as the lily,
I would sing a song of praise.
Often have I heard the honored
name of Williamsburg spoken of in
"that abominable tittle-tattle?the
end issued by human cattle:" but
v these base cloven-footed calumniators,
like the loathesome worm, leave
their paths marked with the .tilth of
malice and the scum of falsehood.
Living, he is a traveling pest. 'Tis
a sad propensity in our fallen nature
to listen to the retailers of pettyscandal,
and "where ignorance is
bliss 'tis folly to be wise." But
when I see the man or woman ignorantly
worshipping "an unknown
God" I teel it my Christian duty to
get the wanderer on the light track,
and should 1 fail the fault is not in
me, but in the other party.
Show me a town the size of the
county seat of Williamsburg
having a larger deposit in its bank.
At the cL.-e of the year Jan 1st,
1905 theie was about $154,000.00
on deposit. This is the only safe
way to arrive at the county at large.
Where did this money come from
but out of the territory tributary
thereto? Considering that there are
several other banking institutions
scattered about over the couuty, the
,above figures are even more startling.
But is this all? No; for the county
has a wide-spread fame of being the
j. ban uer ti ticking portion of the State.
Ask the trucker what his year's profits
amounts to and be will name you
figures that will make your eyes
open wide. Is Williamsburg then
Sodom or Gomorrob? Nay, verily,
she leads no; only in these instances,
*hnt. in manv others. She is indeed '
a city set upon a hill, whose light
you cannot bide. Should I not feel
proud of her? Should I not, although
some miles away, as a sou of
her honored soil cry aloud in her
name? Yea, I would be worse than,
traitor, especially when I hear her
name reproached. There is a natu-j
ral inclination in almost all persons j
to pelt others with stones. Our
right hands ache to throw them.

the uncivilized man- in us all.Others
*ho are more guilty are first to cast
the stone. Cease to do evil, learn
to do well. Don't live like a snail
within your own shell, but get out
