THURSDAY, JAN 19, 1905. (
Make it Unanimous.
Among the duties devolving uVui j ?
the present legislature is the election
of two circuit judges, one of whom , '
will succeed Judge Ernest Gary, of |
the Fifth Circuit. There raav be' r
. * 1 *
. other lawyers in the Fifth circuit
capable of filling this office as well ^
as Judge Gary has tilled it, but tlicy ]
are certainly not numerous; and to
a?a wUa Una crv rlynrnnrrlilr 1
fcp MH/C vur Tt ll\J I1UO OU V UVI Vll^UM | ft,
demon strand his peculiar fitness for J
this high and responsible position
with a new and untried experiment
would argue not only a lack of ap-1
preciation for service well rendered, j
but also indicate a sad lack of judg- j
lueut and discretion 011 the part of a
body to whom is delegated the power ; 1
to make and unmake high officials!
according U the dictates of their ,
fancy.
To say tha t J udge Gary has proved 1
himself an able, fearless, upright
and conscientious judge would be 1
biu simple justice to one who in
point of learning aud legal acumen *
1 c
is admittedly without a superior on
the bench. j
While we have no idea that serious
opposition to Judge Gary's re- '
election will de velop, at the same <
time it would-be a graceful and ap- '
propriate compliment, out of recognition
of his eoiineut worth, for the l
legislature to make his election f
- unanimous.
(Joverpor Hevward has refused to I
consider thp third term idea. In (
fact he has definitely announced Ins }
withdrawal from politics at the J
close of tfve second term.
It now looks as though Calhoun
county, formed from portions of
Edgefield, Green wo-k! and other ]
counties, will win out, as the State j]
board of canvassers has failed to'l
sustain the protest from Edgefield 1
county as to the legality of the i
. I ^
election involving the creation of the1
new county.
A bill has bden introduced in the
legislature making it equivalent to
a blow for ore person to apply to
another certain offeasivo epithets.
As a matter of fact public opinion
has already nude the aggressor the
person who uses insulting language
toward another, and it seems that
uch a law might very properly be
added to the statute bx>k.
